New paper just published in Synthese: Instrumental Understanding link.springer.com/article/10.1...
In this paper I start developing an account of pragmatic understanding fit for an epistemology of scientific instruments, drawing especially on Davis Baird's Thing Knowledge. #philsci #philsky
Alice Murphy at st Andrews is looking for a 2 year postdoc on a super cool aesthetics-meets-values-in-science project, real quick turn around on applications so get in thar! #philsci www.vacancies.st-andrews.ac.uk/Vacancies/W/...
Pretty open minded about this so please share widely, philosophers!
Possible research focuses include:
i) Values in Science where the postdoc will have expertise on the value-ladenness of scientific inquiry, or
ii) Aesthetics and Social Epistemology where the postdoc will have expertise in collective aesthetic judgement and aesthetic practices

A picture of Epicurus wearing sunglasses. Title: When Epicurus took an all-inclusive holiday A package resort deal reminded me of one of the most important things in life – the ancient Greek philosopher would have approved Emily Herring 10 Sep 2025 12:00 AM
I wrote about my first ever package holiday and the beauty of experiencing weirdness with a dear friend

Two of the novels I read this summer, Süskind’s 'Perfume' and Yuzuki’s 'Butter' both tell stories of murder and revolve around intense sensory experiences. That got me thinking about how little philosophy seems to care about smell and taste

I wrote another blog thing on imagination for The Junkyard. I figure if I write enough of these things I'll end up writing a book by accident and accumulation.

Three drawings of different kinds of hexagonal snow crystals, side-by-side, on blue, green, and dark-red backgrounds. The middle snow crystal in particular shows off its striking white highlights on its tips.
I have an article out :) It's a deep dive into a series of snowflake images made by James and Cecilia Glaisher in 1855. I talk about this couple's work in my dissertation, but their stunning drawings deserved separate treatment.

I recently took on the role of editor for the Aesthetics section of the Diversity Reading List. The site's aim is to make it easier for people to write more diverse philosophy syllabi by creating a useful database of work. #philsky 1/4
Now would be an excellent moment for the American Philosophical Association to release a statement in support of their students that have been beaten by police for opposing genocide, just as it was a lost moment for the APA to stand in support of their academic colleagues murdered in Gaza
Join our reading group on feminist philosophy of science! We will meet on Mondays, at 17 CET, once per month. Below you will find our schedule and readings.
