I have a whole long theory about this, see below, but the short version is that it is very hard to be a new parent in the United States and sometimes the only people being kind to you also have terrible opinions about things like vaccines and raw milk.

If the US is openly throwing aside the rules of engagement, the world is about to get a lot more dangerous for US sevice members

I know this is not the main point, but his claims around critical studies give away the game. This is just right-wing slop.
If he had spent any time with the literature, he would understand that "queer identity" leaves MORE room for nontraditional gender expression without transition, not less.

In Defense of Effeminate Boys
If anyone had suggested that I might really be a girl, I donβt know how I would have responded.
By Ben Appel
If medical authorities have a rigorous way of distinguishing effeminate boys from transgender kidsβor of distinguishing transgender kids from proto-gay kidsβthey arenβt saying. I have met a number of detransitioned gay men who tried to live as women for a time because they and their families were so averse to homosexuality. According to a 2019 report in The Times of London, staffers at Britainβs foremost gender-identity clinic joked darkly that, as a result of the facilityβs work, βthere would be no gay people left.β A statement last month by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons noted that there is no validated way to assess whether a childβs gender distress will persist over time or disappear without medical intervention. A lack of good research and recordkeeping means that we may never know how many patients who would have been considered effeminate gay boys not so long ago have undergone medical treatments for gender dysphoria.
Absolute trash. The author did not speak to a single medical professional and the article does not contain a shred of evidence that effeminate gay boys are being bamboozled into thinking they're trans.

There is not nearly enough attention being paid to the specific eschatological beliefs of senior members of this Administration.
If our civilian leadership genuinely believes we are living in the End of Days, they have no incentive to seek peace, or even safeguard a future for the next generation.

Trump Has No Plan for the Iranian People
The mere act of bombing Iran will not by itself create a stable regime.
I think Applebaum is absolutely correct that Trump does not have a plan for Day 10 or Day 25 or Day 100
of this war.
But the fact that one of the first targets struck was a school for girls suggests there was also not a plan for Day 0.

As one of those civilian peers, I cannot cosign this hard enough. I knew plenty of enlisted types before grad school, but never not the folks the US military was investing in as future leadership.
Being educated alongside them was so important for us civilians and created lifelong connections

Religious institutions can either be a pillar of authoritarianism, or they can be a powerful convener of pro-democracy forces.
In the United States, they are both. But we can all push our faith communities to pick the correct side.

Fuck Teddy Roosevelt and fuck the Antiquities Act of 1906 that was one of the biggest illegal land grabs from Native tribes in American history.

Lehman notes that βslutsβ and other marginalized groups are often experts in mutual aid. βPeople are like, where did you learn how to do this? Trans people, marginalized people, sex workers, community is all we have. Itβs interesting that people are so shocked at our humanity,β they say.

We often talk about how the US reaps the whirlwind of its actions in the ME or Latin America, but not nearly enough scholarship has gone into how the US laid the groundwork for the full scale invasion by just...accepting Russia's imperial claim that it alone could act as peacemaker in Eastern Europe

We honor their lives by rejecting the evils of antisemitism, dehumanization, and authoritarian violence wherever they appear.

Experts on people-powered movements know that successful pro-democracy movements often turn on whether the state security apparatus will use force on nonviolent protesters
That's one reason why its bad actually to have one wing of the apparatus loyal only to the regime rather than the people

This claim ignores history. NATOβs mutual defense clause has been invoked only once β after 9/11, to defend the United States. Our allies fought, bled, and stayed for nearly 20 years. The record is clear. When America was attacked, NATO showed up.

Ukrainians are demonstrating incredible resilience, creativity, and solidarity. The Ukrainian spirit will not be conquered.
Ukrainians should not need to demonstrate this resilience. No one should.

"Sometimes people who know U.S. history well talk about the ways in which we donβt need to look to European fascism or its horrors to understand whatβs happening in the U.S. today. I think, however that both the international history of camps and domestic U.S. history are critical to understanding whatβs going on and where we are in the current process."
Still, just as the U.S. has a heritage of oppression, it also has a vast inheritance from those who believed and worked for the best that the country could become. From Reconstruction to Native American resistance, the fight against the KKK, the Underground Railroad, and the labor and the Civil Rights movements, we have ancestors and role models in this work.
Countless communities are already rising to the occasion, in Chicago and Minneapolis, in L.A. and D.C., in churches and synagogues and mosques, in PTA meetings, and neighborhood anti-ICE groups.
I can't stop screen grabbing this article.
There are models to help us understand where we are and where we are going, but there are also models for how to end it.
