The problem is that it *did* have to be this way, at least practically speaking. The first mover advantage in the modern era is so huge, and the capital models so dependent on complete market dominance, that every company’s AI had to be rolled out everywhere, all at once, without being ready.

Actually, explaining the *opposite* is much harder. Started watching Parks and Rec with our 12yo, and in the episode where Leslie accidentally conducts a wedding ceremony between two male penguins, he was confused as to why people were making such a big deal of it.

Answering any "how does [X] work" question makes me realize how little I really know about the world.

Showed this to our 12yo the other night and he loved it. Man that sketch holds up.

One of the things I try to instill in my students is that "constitutional" and "unconstitutional" are not legal terms of art. It's OUR Constitution. We're empowered to have views on it, and to view government action or inaction as consistent with our country's norms, values, and traditionsβ€”or not.

It's a weird situation to be in, but we need to distinguish between "what the law is" vs. "what SCOTUS says the law is." It may not feel like it, but these are two different things!

SCOTUS is now a purely political bodyβ€”like a House of Lords, or as @jamellebouie.net put it, a Guardian Council. 1/3

@kenwhite.bsky.social I hear you, but at what point does β€œnoisy withdrawal” cease to be enough? At what point in the breakdown of the legal system do attorney ethics rules stop being meaningful? I don’t know the answer, but I do not envy Ms. Le’s position.

This kicker from @nikobowie.bsky.social: β€œIf the public were aware of how much of the deliberations affecting millions of people are made by 27-year-olds after happy hour, they'd be shocked.”

The justices claim their papers belong to them, not the government or the public, and generally arrange to have them locked away until long after their deaths. The court releases no visitor logs to reveal who meets with the justices.

Thinking about whoever said that by accepting a meal from people and then arresting them ICE agents broke a cultural taboo that was invented by, like, the first humans to set up a tent

Is that just an unfortunate feature of human behavior that social media has magnified? Honestly, I'm willing to believe there's a 3700 cuneiform tablet buried somewhere proclaiming, "Ea-Nasir is a good man and his critics are just haters who don't know good copper."

And not just grandstanding. Follow @jamellebouie.net β€˜s suggestion of having witnesses testify about ICE’s abuses. Have people testify about the death toll from dismantling USAID. Impeach him 100 times over and make the Senate vote on each one of the articles.

I really think that if Dems win the house this fall, the 2027 agenda should be entirely on airing Trump’s abuses. I mean articles of impeachment, and hearings thereon, day in and day out. Do not stop until every abuse is documented in the Congressional Record.

I think what I don't understand is...these cowards are so desperate to keep their seats of power that they're willing to denude those seats of any power? What's the point of being a Senator if you give up the power of the Senate? A fancy title?

When reading ancient history, I used to have thoughts like, β€œI don’t understand, how and why would the Senate just willing vote away all its authority to Augustus?” And now I’m starting to get it. cc @theoderic.bsky.social

Trump ignores laws at will (from TikTok to Epstein), violates the law daily, violates the *Constitution* daily, and faces no repercussions. How long did the Senate last in name after Augustus became princeps? I think the question is not whether it survives, but can we revive it.

β€œMost of the people seem like placeholders, people happy to glad-hand with the public, get a political position, make a lot of money off of it if they can. But they’re not there to make the hard decisions.”

β€œThe Senate is a shadow of its former self, quality-wise. There’s been an almost anti-Darwinian process going on now for a generation or so. You’re left with the meekest and the mildest and the least gifted. You weren’t getting a bunch of lions; you were getting a bunch of lambs....”

Every few months, I remember the quote about the Senate from @dancarlin.bsky.social and am just shocked how spot-on it was.
