Computer things, sometimes I draw pictures of data. Sometimes I also take pictures or make simple noises in complicated ways. Day job: BigQuery @ Google Cloud.

Here’s a thought though… right now we users can’t really fine tune the models so we can’t incorporate that skill which has knowledge that isn’t in the models most likely… but if we could then we’d get the best of both worlds. I have an agent that codes more like me not the median SO commenter.

How many test engineers does it take to change a lightbulb?

None! That’s an observability problem!

I made a tweetdeck clone for all my agents yesterday. Pro tip: route tool approvals to something like that and off you go

As a friend put it “this is one of those Jedi things where you have to make your own lightsaber isn’t it?” “Maybe…” Anyway, I felt like making my own container-centric agent harness using Virtualization.framework and so: github.com/byronellis/p... is the beginning.

Setting aside the whiff of sour grapes, run that thinking forward: why do other people “take it to prod.” Because they had the next project and no time. Now that can be a parallel background tab watching metrics and logs that bails out to the human if needed. You don’t need to bug a team now.

I think it’s a lot to do with the fact that senior folks are comfortable with the idea that you will tell someone to do something and they will do it in a way that you hate, but it works so you let it go. The middle is all about the implementation being Just So and they are having a bad time.

That may be true, but also asks the wrong question. The important question is the productivity difference between an experienced AI dev vs an experienced “classically trained” dev. E.g. single tasking vs multi tasking. Each tasks takes longer but if you can parallelize say 10 this doesn’t matter.

Apropos of nothing really other than being weirded out by “Senior Dev” language is Medium posts, tech levels would be easier to explain if we used character classes instead. There’s some amount of XP involved (everyone states as a tank after all) but there’s more to it than that.

That’s a good idea. I was just talking with someone the other day about the idea of issuing “cognitive tests” to the grid from time to time.

I am pleased that other manufacturers have figured out that not having to look at what you are trying to press while driving is a good thing. Hell my GTI had a slightly angled center console so the driver had better haptics for the radio FFS.

Rivian went with the shifter on the stalk approach like a Crown Vic. “Park” is a button. Works well for me, but I did indeed drive an ‘84 Crown Vic (velour bench front seat!) so YMMV.

See now I’m motivated. It’s got everything. Suffering, new tools, “look away children,” ancient techniques from Sys V, Gibbs Samplers. Nobody calls me a coward and gets away with it but I guess thanks Steve for kicking me in the ass.

I went Full Yegge at the beginning of the year. I am about to see first light on a pretty serious piece of infra work that six months ago I would have SWAGed at somewhere around 8 SWE Year of effort to get to this point. I started a week ago. I might write it up, working title “Two Yaks One Hack.”

Sure and people still drive stick, but it’s a recreational activity. On the professional side writing code isn’t the job. Making computers do what you want is the job.

I think there’s also a lot of anxiety for more senior folks. It’s like being a London cabbie with the Knowledge and GPS just got good. That said I finally bit the bullet and I’m having a ton of fun.

I feel like “momentum engineering” is perhaps a better term than “vibe coding.” The point is not to turn off your brain, it’s more like snowboarding on a deep powder day. The board is going to do what it’s going to do and its your job to not lose velocity and bog down.

Clearly the number of “a”s in waaagh when you launch the app determines the size of the agent cluster here.

Yegge apparently already came to a similar conclusion which he is calling Gastown but somehow is not making a Mad Max reference. Which would also be an appropriate analogy I think.

Folks, we can’t call them agent fleets. That’s boring and besides… these things are clearly waaaghs.

We had an ‘83 300TD station wagon in dijon yellow we got when we were stationed in Germany. That thing was a tank with a rear facing seat. As I recall it chewed through transmissions at a prodigious rate and did not like going to Tahoe at all.

Ah, yes. I have “fond” memories of running coax through the drop ceiling of my parents’ dental office. Twice! Once with thinnet and the second time with a thicknet trunk and vampire taps!

So I had forgotten my current ramekin (a vintage 1980s one that my mom gave me) was smaller than my old one so I made the wrong amount… but things turned out OK in the end.
