For IWD, saw Cecilia Vicuรฑa's excellent show at @immaireland.bsky.social with my daughter, and a stunning
@lisaoneillmusic.bsky.social show with a pal at Pavilion (including a pin-drop cover of Three Babies by Sinรฉad O'Connor). The Vicuรฑa show runs until July. Buy Lisa's album: lisaoneill.ie/home/
That Bowie story!
Also at The Dock: on Friday March 27th, a celebration of John McGahern, on the 20th anniversary of his death. @mylesdungan.bsky.social, Jane Brennan and I will be discussing his work with Vincent Woods. Tickets: www.thedock.ie/whats-on/the...
(More McGahern news soon... @faberbooks.bsky.social)
Kevin Barry was the first person I ever heard talk about this in detail. He says he performs all the characters out loud, does the voices and intonation, to see if they sound like real people.
This is making me think of the horror when someone does it in a public interview on stage (which thankfully, hasn't happened too often, but it's unforgettable when it does).
It was wonderful. Even though I'm pretty sure I had Covid while there! Definitely apply if you can J. x
Apart from writing, you can watch boats on the Shannon and if youโre lucky, some of them have very chill dogs on board.
Last year, I took part in a pilot writing residency at The Dock in Leitrim, working on a book I kept calling my "tiny weird non-fiction project". This short residency is now being rolled out and seeking applications. Honoured they used the title. Apply/spread the word. www.thedock.ie/artists/open...
Well, what serendipity! I vividly remember the opening bars of this being electrifying, and then trying to focus on staying upright because I knew what mayhem was comingโฆ open.spotify.com/track/2DBlfj...
The + body (well, desirable),
The - body (sick, surgically sundered).
In one dark corridor, moved and jolted by photos of her youth (playful, sexy) with ones of post-surgery & aging.
Tracy Eminโs A Second Life at Tate Modern is an eloquent capturing of the wound, and how it influences the work.
And some women! The first time I saw them it was in a standing only venue, where sweat dripped off the ceiling all night, and - rather unfortunately, mainly due to the moshing around me - I was on crutches.
Diana Copperwhite's stunning new show, The Only Thing is the Everything, opens this Thursday at Kevin Kavanagh Gallery in Dublin 8. As a long-time admirer of her work, it was an honour to write a text to accompany this exhibition. www.kevinkavanagh.ie/artists/33-d...
I go with Hockneyโs โGet Up and Work Immediatelyโ.
Tomorrow we release the final episode of Backlisted for the foreseeable future.* After ten years, it's a very odd feeling. I am looking forward to spending more time with my books and fewer times on social media.
* Boats against the current, we beat on via Patreon.

So sorry to hear this A, and I hope itโs only temporary. Thank you and @johnmitchinson.bsky.social for all your hard work. And for letting me gush about Maeve Brennan.
Ha! I used this WB line (in relation to very specific notebooks) in the next book I mean, heโs not wrongโฆ
This excellent anthology about Maeve Brennan's work launches tonight with a sold-out event featuring Roddy Doyle, รilรญs Nรญ Dhuibhne and editor @mollyh.bsky.social. My essay is on Brennan's New York, psychogeography, cities & aloneless. @newislandbooks.bsky.social

Cannot wait to read the forthcoming novel by @louisekennedy.bsky.social. Set between Ireland and England, starting in 1982, it tells the story of Rรณisรญn and Red.

โSelf-portrait in Front of a Green Background with a Blue Irisโ by Paula Modersohn-Becker
A pregnant woman, naked from the waist up clutches her belly. She wears a necklace of amber beads and in standing in from of a green-dotted wall.
Paula Modersohn-Becker was #BOTD in 1876. Self-Portrait on the Sixth Wedding Anniversary is considered the first nude self-portrait of pregnancy by a woman. PMB is not pregnant here, but was a year later. She died two weeks after the birth of her daughter from a DVT, aged 31.ย

Yes I saw! He is definitely the go-to for this kind of stuff (his writing is excellent too).
If this hadn't been solved, I would have recommended Adam Scovell on Instagram, who posts photographs of film locations, particularly horror/folk horror. www.instagram.com/celluloidwic...
As well as Kiki Smith, itโs also the birthday of Russian Cubist & Constructivist painter and costume designer Aleksandra Ekster, born in 1882.
Bad practice, and a weird and questionable over-reliance on an external platform. Especially one that is as extremely problematic as X now is. Like I say, baffled on multiple levelsโฆ
Do the people responsible for the alerts not post them on other social media platforms?
Baffled at anyone who is still using the platform (and trying to justify it).
I read this novel last year and it's superb. Hope you're having a blast in Doolin, such a great festival!
