The solution to exhaustion and disillusionment is in the rebuilding of trust. You don't get there without building up a new guard and new policies.

Which brings me back to: when openings arise, primary the fuckers. As many times as it takes. Gradient ascent sucks, but it's preferable to inaction.

The "back to normal" thing is understandable, and something I've been trying to purge from my phrasing. "Normal" can, at best, be an intermittent step.

As for low trust: remember how I mentioned opportunities and openings? That what I'm pointing to.

I'm not saying to "be reasonable". That tack has always been goalpost-moving bullshit, and I'm admittedly a bit miffed that you've construed as my position. I'm saying that giving a shit about outcomes is non-negotiable, even within severe constraints.

Then respectfully: what alternative is there?

I am under no delusions about the unfairness of this whole game. But I cannot in good faith endorse nihilistic apathy as a position when the worst-case outcomes are as dire as they are.

But each time the flow of bad shit is reduced, that's less directions where attention is diverted and more focus that can be placed on stepwise progress.

(Note: YMMV on Venezuela in particular, idk how that went down internally)

Is that necessarily a "good" outcome? Not necessarily, that still leaves quite a bit of bad shit!

2. Even if horrific shit still happens, there is an element of harm reduction at play. I do not trust that a Dem administration would have been better on Iran or Gaza, but I think the ongoing farces against Venezuela and Greenland may have been averted, not to mention the suffering from USAID cuts.

Two things:
1. Pretty much every vote is a roll of the dice, yeah. Politicians are famously dishonest for a reason! But continuing to take those dice rolls is, in addition to being the only way to potentially land a winner, also the closest thing we have to a mechanism to discourage that dishonesty.

28.02.2026 22:23 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yeah, for sure, the structural challenges are brutal. But every inch of progress is cumulative, y'know? The severity of the current tire fire was the product of decades of right-wing efforts; repairing that damage (and the flaws that enabled it) is likely to be long and challenging in its own right.

28.02.2026 22:01 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The knee-jerk "should've voted!" reaction is both extremely naive and usually a strawman, to be clear, totally on board there. But we also stand to lose quite a lot by throwing up our hands and deciding it was all doomed from the start

28.02.2026 20:54 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I will firmly and loudly disagree with that last bit, with two strong caveats:
1. The vote in question is, in the vast majority of cases, the primaries
2. The vote is an important and necessary step, but not one that works in the absence of activism and community-building

At risk of stating the obvious: they won't bother to because everyone knows the label is pretextual, and even if it weren't, there'd probably be some motivated reasoning to the effect of "well, 'we' made it, so it's fine~"

ssh is an obscure but widely-deployed command. It stands for Secure Snake Home and was made in the 90s to securely play snake online

I made a massively multiplayer backend for it with support for thousands of concurrent snake players

ssh snakes.run to join!

Student on the ground here: a lot of this owes to colleges becoming credential mills, a necessary hoop to jump through to become "middle class". This brings in a good number of people who don't care, and of the ones who do care, the perceived stakes can trigger desperate behavior

Built a version of this deck recently for my bf who loves regigigas. It's such a weird/cool deck, there really is nothing else like it in terms of board management

(Hence, low awareness -> low pressure for boycott campaigns)

EVO feels like it's not held that same importance for Smash in a while, and I've also noticed (again, anecdotally) that there's more fairly offline Smash players due to the nature of the series, so I think there's a real chance that for a lot of the scene, this whole mess isn't even on their radar.

24.02.2026 21:03 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

In my little corner of the FGC, it seems to, but I'm wary of extrapolating from that for obvious reasons. I think the FGC is at least a little more open with discussing this sort of thing, but I also think that lack of awareness plays a role on the Smash side of things. (1/2)

24.02.2026 21:02 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

FGC and Smash scene are two somewhat different communities at this point. I don't mean that in a gatekeepy way, but the two have genuinely grown in parallel to each other due to a relatively lower level of player crossover.

Goomba fallacy probably applies here.

That being said, for anyone who *was* on the expansion pass, being asked to pay an extra surcharge on top of the subscription they were paying for the subscription they were also paying for probably felt like a kick in the teeth.

Altman has openly attested to delusional beliefs about building a god-like "AGI" model. Amodei also has made some wacko statements, but he seemingly tries to stay grounded in reality. (Of course, both men have extreme vested interests in AI, so it's unclear how genuine they're being)

And as far as Iโ€™m concerned, all EVO events are off the table from now on. We saw the largest fighting game tournament on earth go from community ownership to corporate ownership to corrupt oligarchic ownership within the span of about a decade. This is not the FGC. This is brand rehab for monsters.
