Remote sensing folks - any idea where I can find high res imagery for a small area (~1km)? NAIP is too coarse, and <1m private sat images I found have a 25 sq km order minimum it seems? It's just for a family member's property, so they don't need quite that much (and need to get multiple dates)

Scenes from the incredible turnout today at Berkeley's @standupforscience.bsky.social rally. @tedmiguel.bsky.social, @jenniferdoudna.bsky.social, and dozens of researchers, elected officials, and citizens defended science and the jobs, health benefits, and progress it creates for all Americans.

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office.

Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc.

Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

My doctor was 120 miles away for 2 years and I never once saw them in person, but never had any issues with that!! I did have to change meds once last year bc of a shortage, but I had to use CVS because the family-owned pharmacy just refused to carry ADHD meds. Navigating this is such a nightmare. 😭

It has been genuinely inspiring to see so much organic grassroots energy this week. If you attended a 50501 protest yesterday and are looking for a next national day of action, there are worker-led events in cities across the country tomorrow. Check the link to find one near you.

Whaaaat I haven't had any issues. That's such a bummer. I'm glad you were able to get it!

L.A. Fires Show Limits of America’s Efforts to Cope With Climate Change California has focused on fortifying communities against wildfires. But with growing threats, that may not be enough.

"Perhaps the most aggressive type of [climate] adaptation is simply being honest. Officials should start telling people in dangerous areas that their homes can’t be protected." ~Michele Steinberg, wildfire division director, National Fire Protection Association. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/10/c...

Critical Care Backup Battery Program

I just learned that SCE has a program that gives away backup power stations to people who require medical equipment. The one in their picture goes for $1300 and someone on IG told me it ran their mom's oxygen machine for 10+ hours www.sce.com/outage-cente...

Our hearts are with everyone impacted by the #PalisadesFire #EatonFire #HurstFire. This 🧡shares our experience during our 18-day evacuation from the #CarrFire in '18. I offer it again, typos and all, in case there is something here that might be helpful now.

I don't think bias was intended! There is more fire research on NorCal than SoCal, & there are similar (but different) winds, but these events are each unique & place-based. The 2020 fires did involve wind, but also had a lightning storm, heatwave, much more vegetation, and different ecosystems!

Thanks! Do you know if there is much info specific to the southern CA coast here?

Map showing the number of times a location has burned in SoCal and which kind of fire it was: one burning under Santa Ana winds, or one that was a summer, fuel-driven fire without Santa Ana winds. Malibu area had burned at least 8 times from 1900-2017, and has burned twice now since. Image from Kolden and Abatzoglou (2018): https://www.mdpi.com/2571-6255/1/2/19

Here's the reality about the #LAFires this week: this isn't the first time ANY of these places have burned. Not even close. In 2018, we mapped CA fire history to look at fire frequency across SoCal. Santa Monica Mtns area burns more than anywhere else -- up to once per decade in a given spot. 🧡

Hi new bsky friends! I'm Tara, a people-forward forest/fire ecologist in CA. My research focus is on barriers to cultural fire & how non-native folks can be better partners. I care about trees, education, sci comm, equity, & politics, so apologies in advance for the hot takes πŸ”₯ (& baggy Nomex)
