FYI for fellow narrative designers/game writers: the studio in question is Sentona Games and it’s my understanding they are currently interviewing to replace me. Be very careful with them. They were very nice to me and easy to work with right up until I needed the money I was promised.
Yeah, it can be frustrating. The biggest thing that made a difference for me was undo support so you can poke checkboxes without permanently fucking the sizes of everything.

So the BBC promised Davidson and StudioCanal (who made I Swear) that any swearing tics would be edited out from broadcast, and instead they left them in despite a two hour delay, and even put a fucking microphone right in front of him to ensure they picked it up - he was sat at the back of room.

Real talk: You've been on my "if I ever do VO this guy is narrating" list for like 15 years. I just haven't done full VO in a game yet :(
You're applying for a job as a junior, not trying to pitch a publisher. Show someone like me that you can execute to an existing spec and make it playable and you're ahead of 90% of the other applicants. If you've fixed a weird input bug in your itch comments, you're top 1%. Portfolio wins.
If you want to explore weirder, more niche, more rough titles, I suggest using itch.io as your primary platform instead of Steam, EGS or GOG. A lot of bigger commercial indies won't be on here, but often you can play the game jam version of a popular game years before it releases on itch.
I always tell folks to start making things like tetris. Make it playable, watch folks play, decide to add audio, or particles, or VS multiplayer, or haptic controls, whatever makes you curious. You'll be able to have conversations about what you learned that are worth more than a degree.
