Towering sandstone cliffs rise from rolling hills in the foreground to steep vertical rock faces behind. The sky above is unblemished blue. There is a small exposure of white clay at middle right, which seems out of place amid the sandstone. Canon 5DII, f/11

Perched in Death Valley’s Cottonwood Mountains, the Lost Burro Mine is a haunting 1906 gold rush relic. Found after a prospector’s burro wandered off, it features an intact stamp mill and cabins. It’s silent, remote, and feels like history just stopped. 🌵⚒️

Short-eared Owl with it's small ear tufts raised as it's perched on bare branches. There is a word bubble that says "Yes, I DO have ear tufts! They pop up when I need to show you who's the boss." Photo by Scott Carpenter
What makes Short-eared Owls so charismatic is that we actually get to see them in action! While most owls in Oregon stay hidden in dense forests and are active mainly at night, these beautiful birds can often be spotted at dawn or dusk flying low over marshes, grasslands and fields as they hunt.

mushrooms growing in wood chips and forest debris
"I've always thought fairies are like mushrooms, you trip over them when you're not thinking about them, but they're hard to spot when you're searching for them."

Here's my trying not be a "frog in the pot" picture. Fortune has reported some concerning info about Medicare Part A & AARP is raising the alarm about on going threats in the form of bad ideas regarding Social Security solvency.

Watching the full moon rise perfectly between the iconic East and West Mittens is a reminder that nature is the ultimate artist. Truly a "stop and stare" moment in the heart of the Navajo Nation.

Explored along the banks of the Colorado River! Heard a rock wren singing lyrically from the nearby cliffs.

Everywhere I camp, I put out my trail cam. I FINALLY got something besides blowing branches! Hopefully this is the first of many more!

Looking up Snow Canyon in St. George, Utah.
We are standing beside a large lake surrounded by a forest of leafless trees waiting for spring. The sky is overcast with thick dark gray clouds, but small breaks in the clouds along the horizon allow the rays of the recently set sun to paint the bottoms of the clouds near the horizon a vibrant red orange. The sky and trees along the shore are mirrored on the lake surface.

A quick look at a road I towed my Aliner Ranger 12 over with my Subaru Outback Wilderness. It's hard to see what's really going on in the road so watch the orientation of the hood. In 2-3 weeks I should have a video of me setting the Ranger up & taking it down. This is a dispersed camping area.
Looking down from a lofty mountain we can see for many miles. A long ridge covered with dark green spruce runs left-to-right across our view not far below us. Beyond that ridge is a narrow valley, and then another wooded ridge. Beyond that are two more wooded ridges, all running left-to-right across our view, gradually fading into the distance. Beyond all those ridges are lofty mountains, rising above the mountain we are on, blue gray and hazy stretching across the horizon. The sky is a dramatic patchwork of blue and bright white fair weather clouds.

September 1, 1983: I flipped through the register, finding comment after comment about the magnificent view from the fabled Smarts Mountain privy. I shrugged my shoulders and sauntered up to check out the outhouse.

The forest fairies did a little fog dance, so it could mingle with the sunrise. perhaps the gnomes joined in, ha ha, I have no idea.😆
I hope you all have the day you want, and need! Let’s be kind!

Sitting beside a large lake beneath a clear, pale blue gray evening sky. The sun is a ball of golden fire setting behind the forest along the far shore, creating a swath of dazzling sparkles running towards us across the choppy lake surface. Our shoreline is scattered with partially submerged gray boulders and golden brown dormant water plants. A muddy white leather walking shoe is resting on a rock bottom left.

Last season's seed pods from the California Pitcher Sage (Lepechinia calycina) have the most fascinating designs. Found last week at Mt. Diablo State Park in northern California. #nativeplant #nature #naturephotography #seedpods #plants #photography
A lonely lakeshore in dim light centered on an empty park bench, with tall reeds in front of it and bare trees to either side. There's a concrete path just this side of the bench that appears cracked and patched with tar. The water of the lake shows dim ripples far out from the shore. The distance lakeshore reveals a smokestack. The sky is featureless.
