US paid $32m to five countries to accept about 300 deportees, report shows
Some of the world’s most corrupt countries have received huge payments in third-country deportation scheme
Next time you hear someone say health care for all Americans would be too expensive, remind them how much money is available to kick people out of the country, and ask why that is vastly more important to the government than our citizens' health.

Sunday social media day of rest. I'm working on my book, not reading one, but still. The book comes out in October, is called 4 Nurses, and shows healthcare in the U.S. better than what most of us get right now. It is possible to fix our broken system.

Opinion | Nurses Face Horrific Violence at Work. We’re Striking to Change That.
I've been threatened at work--in the hospital and in someone's home, no less, when I did hospice nursing. That was scary. I've broken up a fight and seen staff get hurt. This is not what #nurses "signed on for." It's scary and it's why nurses are leaving the bedside. www.nytimes.com/2026/02/04/o...

Sunday is usually my Social Media Day of Rest, but today I’m posting a pic of the vigil for nurse Alex Pretti that I spoke at last night in Pittsburgh. You can see me, the crowd, and the river behind us. I felt so much hope at the event. There will be dark days ahead, but together we create light.

An Elegy for Nurse Alex Pretti
Book event Feb. 2 with Laura Delano in Pittsburgh on Unshrunk: A Story of Psychiatric Treatment and Resistance
I'll be speaking at a vigil for Alex Pretti tonight in Pittsburgh--5:30 at the Fred Rogers memorial on the Northside. We nurses have to stick up for one another, and for justice. You can read my Substack here: theresabrown.substack.com/p/an-elegy-f...

Why are ICE agents even allowed to carry guns? How is being able to kill people part of their mandate? Dems should disallow them from carrying lethal weapons--they don't need them and they agents are out of control.

Playing politics with health care is a matter of justice
A new column in Cancer Nursing Today
I'm realizing health care & politics can't be separated in the U.S. Killing Nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis seems of a piece with direct attacks on health care. They want to cause pain and don't care who gets hurt. My Substack newsletter from last week: theresabrown.substack.com/p/playing-po...

I usually post that Sunday should be a social media day of rest. With the death of Nurse Alex Pretti, I’m not so sure about this Sunday, but a pic of my dog enjoying the snow here in Pittsburgh seemed good, too.

Went to an anti-ICE protest yesterday in Pittsburgh w/another nurse--beyond sad that ICE killed a nurse today with 10 shots at close range. It's time to stand up & speak up. Don't give in to fear. There are more decent people in this country than violent sadists. We are stronger than them, together.

I have always found this quotation inspiring. There are so many terrible forms of injustice, that MLK singled out health care says something powerful. It is inhumane not to care for the weakest and most vulnerable among us. A strong nation cares for all its citizens--that's how it stays strong.

Happy 2026 ya’ll! I’m busy with book edits and trying to digest what our crazy government is doing. A happy latte felt like a good image for today. Hugs!

Unions in Health Care are a Sign of Hope.
Plus--my first week at the new job was good.
There's a lot of bad news in health care lately but in Pittsburgh a new union of nurses at UPMC Magee hospital is a sign of hope in health care. Read my Substack here: open.substack.com/pub/theresab...

Same. I just took an outpatient job. There’s no reason why inpatient work has to be so freakin hard on nurses.

It’s Personal: When There’s No One Right Medical Response to Cancer | Cancer Nursing Today
Theresa Brown, RN, reflects on why the act of choosing among treatment pathways "can be a salve to the fear that cancer inevitably brings."
I talked with a friend of a friend about her breast cancer treatment. Two different doctors gave her conflicting advice. Confusing as that is, it means she can choose which treatment decision feels right for her. Read my latest Cancer Nursing Today column. www.cancernursingtoday.com/post/its-per...

If the American Hospital Association is supporting the idea of supporting working nurses instead of bringing in travelers or temps, we are seeing a sea change in the understanding of nurses' value. May it last--because nurses are the heart of healthcare.

I don't have to live with post-surgical pain and maybe you don't either.
New column in Cancer Nursing Today
This week "The Healing Newsletter" is about real healing. For 8 years I've lived with post-surgical pain following my lumpectomy for breast cancer. Acupuncture and physical therapy have made that pain melt away. Read about it here--maybe you can be pain-free, too! open.substack.com/pub/theresab...

I can't believe it's come to this--that we will let Native Americans, and lots of other Americans, starve to fund tax cuts for people who already have more money than they know what to do with. Going hungry in the richest country in the world. SMH.
