I think it's appropriate to commemorate Canada's moving away from a symbol of an empire that was very much about white supremacy and genocides to one that holds a promise for something much better.

Near to here is a river that rises in Alaska and flows into Canada before it joins the larger Yukon River which eventually flows into Alaska.
Americans regularly show up on the Canadian portions of these rivers with no clue they even left Alaska.

Two issues with the story:

1/ Let's not describe the threatened north slope of Alaska, the Arctic Refuge, as 'desolate, because it gives ammunition to the extractivists.

2/ The study is driven not by curiosity but by extractivism.
