Fata Morgana: when Morgan le Fay comes out to play At first it was subtle, barely enough to suggest anything was amiss - a long, flat-topped plateau in the distance, somewhere over towards Drumochter, and I was struggling to identify it. We do of c...

It's @walkhighlands.co.uk time! And in my latest column I'm taking a closer look at the weirdness that is Fata Morgana. I've only seen this bizarre mirage a couple of times, and this particular sighting was on 27th December on Carn na Drochaide. My brain hurts after writing it though! 😆

Detail: Where do our old computers go? Here is a large-scale abstract mixed-media wall art piece by artist Elias Sime. It’s a tapestry made of woven and layered reclaimed electrical wires that are tightly wound and braided, then nailed to a panel. Obsolete circuit boards make a border. Colors are mostly green with gold, purple, turquoise. Sime creates his work by recycling e-waste that he finds at the Menalesh Tera (translated as “what do have?”) open-air markets in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He learned the braiding technique from local women, who then collaborated with him. See a fascinating video: “Elias Sime – Tightrope.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7Vm8JXYQ3E&list=PLg9bohYNTKk4kJwapygHlkIk-RW0Z-711&index=2

Nominated for an Oscar (1964), the NFB documentary about Kenojuak and the print “Arrival of the Sun” is a masterpiece and a great work of art (in any genre). Her declaration below is captivating and understated in my view!

Built 5,381 years ago - over a few days - in the heart of Somerset, the elevated Sweet Track walkway ran 2 km across marsh, connecting two Stone Age communities for 10-15 years.

wow, this is amazing SciComm. Really nice.

Not so nice of a story for my colleagues in Juneau.

But neat story scientifically.

Wonderful.

The UK has ~40 years of air pollution data in paper reports that badly needs a rescue. Covers 1921 to the early sixties including miners' strikes, the great depression & the aftermath of the 1956 Clean Air Act. Would open the opportunity to study past exposure in today's older people.
