Wayland might be the future of Linux, but Iβm not leaving X11 yet
Explore the unexpected benefits of X11 that are making Linux users hesitant to embrace the new Wayland technology.
There's an article on #XDA about staying with #X11 rather than using #Wayland for now.
"Despite the shiny new tech, X11 seems to be a more reliable option due to its compatibility with a variety of apps. It doesnβt break as oftenβ¦"

At #FOSDEM 2026 there was a talk about "Separating the Wayland Compositor and Window Manager." While some of the #X11 facts are not entirely correct, we welcome the idea from a technical standpoint. ;-) #XLibre #XingsDay fosdem.org/2026/schedul...

We are a mixed group from all walks of life with different views, but we leave them at the door so we can concentrate on developing an X11 display server. Our two basic principles are:
Anybody who's treating others nicely is welcome.
Anybody who's interested in bringing X forward is welcome.

Xfce 4.20 running on XLibre
#Xfce will keep #X11 compatibility for the foreseeable future besides their work on their Xfwl4 #Wayland compositor. That's stated at wiki.xfce.org/releng/wayla... and still holds true as verified with some Xfce developers. We're happy to provide an X11 server to run Xfce on. #XLibre

We'd like to understand how you came to this conclusion.
Our first question is how many XLibre developers you think there are and how many of them you know.

You don't get to own Xorg. It belongs to the X.org foundation and community.
X.org literary hosts and runs Wayland and Weston
Xorg is dead and we killed it. And nobody regrets it.

@alatiera we worked hard to kill it

There's no value in holding back features.
There's no merit in canceling contributors.
There's no progress in removing commits.
There's no freedom in forced obsolescence.
We forked #Xorg to clean up the code, fix bugs, add new features, and release it.
We bring #X11 forward. #XLibre
