We don't really know the scope of the data mining. On paper it might be all by the book, per their claims. But the tech has the capability to be awful and the people involved are also involved in awful stuff, so we have zero reason to trust them. Persona are out anyway, so this is by the by now.

Last year. OK I didn't know this, I thought they'd been using Persona from the start, and it was only in the last month or two that the scope of Persona's badness was really coming to light.
That being said, the fact that my account was included in the test when I was already verified still stands.

I think it's that they emphasise the gap in the first place that rubs me the wrong way. I'm particularly vexed about last week when the "uk experiment" went so wrong, and this is basically unaddressed. I feel very betrayed to have verified in good faith, and then be part of a failed experiment.

Yea. I don't have an answer to this problem, but I do know that the current solutions aren't effective and do more harm in other ways.
This problem is incredibly complex and stems from systemic issues with the modern internet that need to be addressed, particularly around centralised social media.

It also implies that those 90% of users don't care what happens to the other 10%, and that we'd have no solidarity.
Heck, I've already had to age-verify. I'm privileged enough that I don't need to fear it. Others aren't, and I stand with them.

I really, really dislike their tactic of "90% of users will be unaffected". It rings as hollow as Apple's age old tactic of "a small percentage of users might experience a problem", where they never address the actual design flaw in the product that's their fault.

I think that some kind of age verification is going to be necessary for social media as we know it. We either have to segregate the minors, or ban them from social media. What we have right now isn't safe and does need to change. But heavy-handed identity scans, that's not a solution either.

However, the "What we're changing right now" section give me hope, because actions speak louder than words.
This is a start. But Discord have a long and uphill slog to regain my trust, because if you weren't malicious, you were negligent, so how I know this won't happen again...?

There's a lot of talk about intentions that hand-wave away the myriad of red-flags surrounding persona which they didn't see or ignored. They talk about 'testing persona and deciding they didn't meet the bar' without apologising for the clusterfuck it caused.

The only difference between Malicious Damage and Gross Negligence is the Intent behind it, but the thing is, the outcome is the same. Reading this blog I can believe their actions aren't malicious, but is incompetence really an improvement when, as I say, the outcome is the same?
