"Have the squirrels returned to Ripley County after Rackley and his mountain curs ate so many in the '80s?" is the topic du jour in the Dohack sisters + mom group chat.

The Office Siren by Katharine Tyndall The office siren: fills a plastic cup from the water cooler, sprinkles in salt from a shaker on her desk. With one webbed pinky she stirs in the granules. It still doesn't taste like the sea. ...

"The office siren: is definitely the one who brought fish for lunch, left it open in the shared fridge, though she will not admit it. Fish is far from her first choice. Her colleagues should be happy they’re not in the fridge, chopped into pieces, in a Tupperware with her name on it."

Relatable.

Yeah! And there's a lot less stop-and-go if your municipality has a nice trail system or you use side streets.

Pretty little six speeds like my city bike aren't so swift in terms of mph, but when you account for parking it takes me about as much time to pedal somewhere as it does to drive.

The dog age math is a valid point, but taking a bird dog into a chicken yard right after a pheasant hunt is spectacularly dumb.

One thing I miss about working for the ol' word factory is being invited to do things I might not have thought to try ... like Krav Maga.

We've been very wrong about Stone Age women "Never assume" is a golden rule – especially when looking at 10,000-year-old human remains

It started with a seemingly innocuous assumption, an easily made logical leap: For a rather long time, archeologists who found burial sites with weapons or hunting gear inside would label the remains as male.

Fresh new piece:

Good insight from my friend @jasonrosenbaum.bsky.social of @stlpublicradio.bsky.social for media crews traveling to cover communities with whom they have no previous connection during periods of unrest.

Jason's own reporting during and after the protests in Ferguson was spectacular, btw.

I love when my translators have questions. The splendid Mikael Cabon in France needs to know if a river in Written on the Dark flows into the sea or into another river: his word choice will be different.

When translators are careful it is a gift to an author AND a reminder to protect them from AI.

Went to the bank today and the man in front of me is asking if there's a way to keep his wife from seeing certain things. I straighten to full height β€” 5'9" in those boots β€” so when he turns around the first thing he sees is an ENORMOUS woman looking down on him with eyebrows of disgust.

Why yes, I would very much like to play a board game involving supply-chain resilience, fair labor practices and marketing strategy. In fact, I would like an expansion pack with fun carbon reduction, water stewardship and ethical governance challenges.
