you could easily make a good film adaptation, and one in which all the major plot beats were faithful. but the way that adaptation handled chronology, character development, and mood would have to change completely with the new medium.
there's a lot I love about this book, but one is that it tells what's in some ways a very "cinematic" story in a way that both "feels like you're watching a movie" at times AND is very tailored to its medium, taking full advantage of the medium's tricks

I think if you're going to do this you have to maintain a balance between awareness of these facts, and a slightly narcissistic attitude that of course YOUR taste is correct here (or else you're tempted to pander)
maybe it's just obvious common sense to people who aren't me, but one of the most valuable things I've learned about writing over the past 6 years is that there is NO reliable relationship between how good *I* think a story is, whether *editors* like/accept it, and how hard it hits with *readers*
