Intellectual property is the water we are swimming in. It's so ingrained in how businesses operate and how we express ourselves that it's hard to imagine alternatives and foresee how it could change in the future. That's what I tried to do.

Dr. Gladys West, the pioneering mathematician whose work laid the foundation for modern GPS technology, has died. She was 95.
Talking about applications of GPUs to 3D graphics.

"Archaeologists discovered that people have known about popcorn for millennia [...] Between 2007 and 2011, evidence as early as 4,700 BCE for popping corn were discovered as macrofossil cobs" (yes I read the Wikipedia page on popcorn while eating popcorn) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popcorn...
This is different from the type of video I normally do and I expect it to get less traction, but I started the channel to explore topics that I find interesting and this one happened to be fascinating.
Talking about wildfire predictions with numerical simulations and machine learning models. What I found the most interesting during my research is how ecosystems have adapted to fire and how indigenous communities developed controlled burns to modify their environment.

The page "Waluigi effect" from Wikipedia. The text goes: "In the field of artificial intelligence (AI), the Waluigi effect is a phenomenon of large language models (LLMs) in which the chatbot or model "goes rogue" and may produce results opposite of the designed intent, including potentially threatening or hostile output, either unexpectedly or through intentional prompt engineering."
They've run out of names
I know I'm basic but cooling off in a lake after playing beach volleyball is a 10 / 10 experience
An excerpt from the Wikipedia page "Nitrogen fixation". The paragraph is titled "Lightning". It goes: "Nitrogen can be fixed by lightning converting nitrogen gas (N2) and oxygen gas (O2) in the atmosphere into NOx (nitrogen oxides). The N2 molecule is highly stable and nonreactive due to the triple bond between the nitrogen atoms. Lightning produces enough energy and heat to break this bond allowing nitrogen atoms to react with oxygen, forming NOx. These compounds cannot be used by plants, but as this molecule cools, it reacts with oxygen to form NO2, which in turn reacts with water to produce HNO2 (nitrous acid) or HNO3 (nitric acid). When these acids seep into the soil, they make NO3− (nitrate), which is of use to plants."
I knew that nitroplasts could fix nitrogen but I somehow didn't know about lightning, this is really cool
I have found a new Wikipedia page to fuel my optimism: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...
Really curious if anyone has more thoughts, I'm kind of clueless on that topic. Would also be happy to see article / video recommendations on this
a society without copyright is less conceivable to me than a society without money.
Also, I have trouble figuring out how we could transition into that kind of system. Copyright is an international framework built upon decades of laws and agreements, many people would fight tooth and nail against weakening it. I can imagine baby steps toward less powerful patents, but
Before modern laws, people would copy others without consequences, but that also meant they couldn't really profit from their own ideas. Artists had to live off rich patrons (with some exceptions). Has someone imagined a copyright-less system that doesn't disempower people who are not already rich?
If we remove or weaken patents / copyright, what would prevent small creators from getting ripped off by larger companies? It might give them more power rather than leveling the playing field.
I wanna talk about copyright. I got comments in my video about monopolization in the GPU market pointing out that large companies weaponize patents to get rid of competitors. And with AI taking space in creative careers, it seems like copyright laws should be updated or dropped. A few thoughts 🧵
This is the sequel to the video I made in March about how complicated GPU programming can get. Here, I tried to figure out WHY it is so inconvenient and how it can evolve in the future.

The vintage "Byte" magazine with an advertisement that displays: "Whenever you're using your computer . . . from start to finish of your session . . . Sidekick™ will be there ready to serve. And it's as lightning-fast and compact as only Borland knows how to make it. Always just a keytroke away... Introductory Offer $49.95"
They've been selling assistants since the IBM PC! With just one keystroke, you could open a calculator, a notepad, and even a calendar! archive.org/details/byte...

My new video explains my various grievances about the ambient AI discourse. We often run in loops discussing the same things ("will we lose jobs", "when will AGI happen"), I try to avoid speculations to focus to current and real problems.
