overall, these findings advance understanding of auditory and multisensory coding in the hippocampus, and reveal a dissociation along its longitudinal axis, from facilitation in posterior to generalization in anterior.
this and more in the paper! BIG thanks to those helped with data collection.
what about the rest of the brain?
whole-brain searchlight analysis revealed parallel effects in canonical multisensory cortical regions β situating the hippocampus within a broader multisensory network π§
how does the hippocampus generalize across sensory modalities? π
we found that the anterior hipp showed crossmodal decoding between auditory and visual versions of the same clip, suggesting a more abstract representation.
when we looked at multivariate patterns, a different picture emerged. RSA analysis revealed representations of both auditory and visual scenes.
furthermore, the posterior hipp showed enhanced similarity for congruent relative to unisensory stimuli, demonstrating multisensory facilitation πποΈ
first, we ran a GLM to examine univariate activity.
the hippocampus showed only visual responses across subfields, with no activation for auditory stimuli and no benefit of congruent audiovisual stimuli. but the story wasn't over π
using high res fMRI, we investigated this for auditory and visual modalities. participants viewed repeated movie clips in four formats: audio only, video only, and congruent or incongruent audiovisual π½οΈπ
we examined processing along the hippocampal long axis and across its subfields.
the human hippocampus receives convergent input from multiple sensory systems, yet we lack a basic understanding of how this structure integrates across senses.
we tackle this problem in our new preprint!

Hot take: the hippocampus isn't actually "evolutionarily ancient" and its not helpful to think of it as such.
The full argument for this take is right here (but you need to scroll down to sections 5-6):

π2003 marked the year in which the retro-cue paradigm was born. Fast forward, 23 years later, we adapt this logic to long-term memory and ask how does attention shape retrieval from long-term memory? π€

The Deliberation Taboo
Cognitive science is, nominally, the science of thinking. We argue that the field has no theory of what thinking is and, even worse, that the topic has largely dropped out of focus. 1/
