Do car-free zones hurt disabled people? We asked experts.
City planners and advocates are seeing "accessibility used as a political football."
“…disabled people are actually less likely to drive than nondisabled people and more likely to get around by walking and rolling and taking transit. Car-heavy cities are also disproportionately dangerous for disabled folks…”— @nondriver.bsky.social
Don’t use accessibility “as a political football.”

Farkas says it's an unfair equalization that Calgary pays more education property taxes than Edmonton
He didn't do the math.
Calgary has $457B of assessment to Edmonton's $220B.
The Leg will get $1.2B in YYC prop taxes this year, then return $2.2B in funding YYC school boards.

Against official policy, I bring by Tern GSD on Seattle light rail because I need to be able to bike on both ends of my trips. There are no bikeshare options for parents carrying kids. Family bikes should be prioritized over space for other bikes.

The UCP ripped off some of my footage to make an ANTI-bike lane video. The bike lane shown wasn’t the one they wanted to rip out. You can see my brakehoods in the video so I knew it was mine.

One of the reasons you should take up a transportation cycling habit asap.
Price of gas becomes mostly meaningless.
Same goes for rush hour traffic reports.

My teenage girls like rides in the UA but only one at a time. No one is strong enough to ride with me inside but I have a GSD coming that might solve that. Otherwise, I spend time trying to think of errands that require the bakfiets. Alas, you can only hit Costco so often.

Right wing Alberta influencers are demanding an Edmonton City Councillor apologize for... condemning the KKK in black history month?
The accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers think sharing the message "the KKK is bad" is an attack on Premier Danielle smith.
This is where we're at.

Here's how my own experiences riding around these cities have influenced the way I think about urban cycling.

Danielle Smith is scheming to force all public libraries in Alberta to implement her book ban.
Multiple sources have confirmed to me that the UCP is planning to require public libraries like EPL to ban and restrict material at the UCP's direction
It's coming.

I’m using the free DaVinci Resolve. There are lots of tutorials on YT and it’s fairly easy to get started. I knew nothing when I started making my videos. After four years, you can barely see an improvement in my videos but my editing process is faster.

Every leader should be required to ride a bike (if able) with a 6 year old before they provide any direction on bike infrastructure.
Years ago we had the mayor bike to school with my then 6 year old, within the first :30 seconds they were almost hit by a driver on live TV. Every leader should be required to ride a bike (if able) with a 6 year old before they provide any direction on bike infrastructure

City is hiring a supervisor for mobility lane maintenance crew, including snow, ice, & debris. Vote here: SHOULD the hiring criteria include personal, all-season, experience with the mobility network, or Oulu's winter cycling infrastructure maintenance training?

On Saturday, we will be testing the YEG ward with the best bike infrastructure (so far) to see if one can ride between places in the ward that women need to go: schools, hardware stores, groceries, clinics, malls, LRT stations, cafes, seniors centre, City Hall & a college (spoiler: answer is no).

New paper finds that US bike deaths have "trended toward lower-density suburban areas" rather than central cities
Those killed tend to be poor and non-white.
Lesson: The suburbanization of poverty could be contributing to the surging number of cyclist fatalities.

Line of snow piled in the painted bike lane, that is in the door zone of parked cars, while the parking and travel lanes for vehicles are clear
Can you find the bike lane between the parking and travel lanes for SUVs?

Yaaa, um.
We aren't the ones that said we'd never back down, just for the record.
We know the City of Edmonton can do excellent work, and we believe that Wîhkwêntôwin deserves great! We will be the first to say we like good things - like 132 Ave or the downtown bike network.
