In the 1960 presidential race, New Yorkβs electoral votes decided JFK's presidency. Likewise, FDR and Ronald Reagan secured New Yorkβs electors by fusing with minor parties, whose vote totals exceeded the margin of victory. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #FusionVoting
Will responds brilliantly to a criticism of Democratic Public Finance here with an illuminating thread that not only addresses the criticism head-on but does so by identifying + dissolving neoliberal assumptions upon which the original criticism depends. The Peopleβs Money workshops allow New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status, to decide how a portion of the city budget is spent to support their communities.
Fusion voting powered the abolitionist strategy of the 1840s and 1850s β allowing parties to unite behind the same nominee while keeping their own ballot line.
It freed smaller parties from the βspoilerβ trap and made opposition to the Slave Power electorally visible. More voice. Real leverage.
After more than a year of bargaining and repeated labor law violations by NYU a supermajority of contract faculty voted to authorize a strike, with 90% of voters supporting the action.

I hear that. At the same time, I think I'd be likely to support trading the sorts of insurance public-policy problems we currently have for the new kinds of problems (like the one you identify) that would arise.
Good piece by @freedlander.bsky.social. I differ with Z's assessment that Delgado's campaign was likely to produce at most a merely symbolic victory (a difference deriving from deeper differences in assessing the Left ecosystem). But Z has done a very good job so far of keeping the many on his side.
Thank you, and that's great. I'm interested to learn more (especially how the people who were tenants before the conversion are legally characterized after the conversion).
"Thereβs one solution that, while a political nonstarter now, might only need conditions to worsen a bit to get a better reception: setting up a government-run provider to compete with private insurers. About β of US homeowners support this, including 32% of the self-described 'conservative' ones."
On being a good opportunity for tenant-unionization: yes, I think you're totally right.
On the transition to coops: if you're thinking about tenants becoming shareholders, I imagine people might then lose eligibility for the vouchers (disclaimer: I'm no expert)βbut I love the way you're thinking!
