I'm reading 'The Lighthouse of Stalingrad' by Iain McGregor. So far it's seemed a summary of other secondary sources, but I think he looks into the Pavlov's house story in some detail. Also looking at 'The Child That Books Built' by Francis Spufford. I'm of a similar age and was also drawn to books

Today makes five weeks sober (should I get through it). Unplanned, but stopped boozing to recover from surgery, and mostly I'm feeling much better for it. Not much of a milestone, but by far the longest I've been sober as an adult.

Something magnificent about Kemi Badenoch's self-confidence, and her claim that the Mandelson affair is entirely down to her asking questions at PMQs. Like a toddler who thinks their plastic steering wheel is controlling the car.

Hello, I'm reading 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie', by Muriel Spark. I've also got an audio book on the go; the Andy Serkis reading of 'The Two Towers', by J. R. R. Tolkien. LOTR has been my 'comfort reading' for many years, and I'm loving it all over again with this excellent actor reading it.

Hello, hope you had an enjoyable break. I'm recovering from a hip replacement last week, and reading 'Project Hail Mary', by Andy Weir. I don' t often go for such 'hard' sci-fi (if that's what it is), but most importantly, he's a good story-teller and I'm enjoying it.

The same people who said that the mass murder of children in schools was a sad but necessary price to enable citizens to bear arms and oppose tyranny are now saying that if you carry a gun itβs your fault if youβre murdered.

The 'Lucifer Box' Set, by Mark Gatiss. A rather louche Edwardian gent in top hat smoking a cigar.
Well worth checking out. There are three books in the series.

Mark Gatiss, The Devil in Amber'. Second in the excellent 'Lucifer Box' series. Great fun, well-paced, camp, funny. This one feels like a Denis Wheatley pastiche.

Hello, I'm in short story season now, so I'm flitting between Jeanette Winterson's 'Christmas Days' and Johnny Mains' (Ed.) 'Illusions of Presence'. Both excellent. Happy winter festival! May you all find some time somewhere to relax, reflect, and do what you like to do.
