Admin data tends to be good/more accurate for some things, but not uniformly. Its clearly wrong that admin data is always better for everything. It also doesnβt have to be fraud - thereβs fairly well documented errors in education variables in German social security records, for example.
@nilsbraakmann.bsky.social , @lindseymacmillan.bsky.social, and I form the program committee. More info here: applied-microecon.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/sane-worksho...
Time to submit a paper to the Fifth Annual Scotland and Northern England Conference in Applied Micro! Steve Machin (LSE) will deliver the keynote. 5-7 May, submit papers here:

I agree re the opportunity - we are lucky and have three replacements posts that weβre currently recruiting for - interestingly we were also lucky in 2020, when we had more. It makes a big difference.
Not sure about the βmissingβ bit - UK institutions have financial issues, Netherlands have government cuts etc. Iβd say weβre well aware that itβs a buyers market at the moment, but lots of places have no headroom to hire.
We have a bit on that in section 4.2, we look at spillovers to other supermarkets nearby and other crimes - thereβs not a lot of evidence on spillovers. The other bit to keep in mind - shoplifting increases everywhere over the time period - just a lot less strongly at Tesco than elsewhere.
This started out as Wednesday's undergrad dissertation. Supervising undergrad dissertations has always been one of the aspects of the job I like the most, so itβs particularly nice to see outcomes such as this! Very fun project to do as well!
Now in Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics (with Wednesday Croft): We consider the introduction of private security measures in supermarkets and their role in preventing shoplifting using a well-publicised change at Tesco.

Thanks Alex! Was really good to talk to you.
That would be brilliant- come and say hi!
People in London (and elsewhere with internet access as it's also online) - if you ever wanted to hear me talk about geocoded crime data and causal inference - here's your chance (June 10th at 4 at the Met). Free but ticketed: www.ticketsource.co.uk/mps-research...

Always nice to see your government carefully engaging with evidence and coming up with nuanced takes that do a complex topic justice π...
I wouldn't count on that given that numbers are already contracting across many subjects. My own and neighbouring disciplines are probably fine, but that's far from uniform...
As is a lot of the rest to be honest...
The instrument measurement error is *wild*.
