THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

Setting the scene: on the left is Arrow Video's special edition of Pupi Avati's dread-laden giallo THE HOUSE WITH LAUGHING WINDOWS. On the right, Gretchen Felker-Martin's BLACK FLAME, a novel about a cursed film. Between them stands Pinguina Vercotti, a penguin rocking a trenchcoat and fedora, topped off with angular sunglasses. Commentary follows. So it's come to this. A humble fact rat, a simple soul who merely hungers to read everything ever written, went humbly forward like the humble questing vole (except it's for facts instead of dirt), and got a little ahead of himself, letting his To Be Read pile number in the low triple digits. Big deal, right? Well, apparently not? Pinguina Vercotti, whom I assume is being paid by a certain beloved otter who shall remain nameless—*for now*—and has repeatedly complained about something or other, I wasn't listening, anyway I guess I need to finish one of these two tonight or there will be “consequences.” Fine, whatever, you know it's rude to wear sunglasses indoors, fun fact.

UPDATE CONTINUES! Hey, remember how my assorted TBR piles were metastasizing out of control? And did you notice how I Amazoned more stuff just recently anyway? Well, someone noticed for sure, and Pinguina Vercotti says I gotta finish off a new arrival tonight or there will be... trouble.

Hokus-kersmokus, have you seen Stuart Gordon's DAGON (2001)? For my money, it's the Lovecraft adaptation that does the best job of conveying the sheer, bleak hopelessness of human existence in the world of the Crhulhu Mythos.
