I've salvaged so much to recreate, repurpose, or just save, I'm going to need several lifetimes to complete imagined projects. My focus is woodworking but my imagination runs non stop,. I really enjoy your approach.
The naturally created wood is always my finish. Sanded through 22 grit levels to a polished level looking and feeling like a polished chunk of granite.
This is life edge wood presentation I could get behind because my approach is to reveal, as you stated, natural art, in a useful way. Every time I handle a chunk of wood , unique grain is like a snowflake, one of a kind, ever.

A decaying structure
Make a template pattern the size of hole you need thick enough1/4-3/8 thick wood or plastic. Use a flush trim router bit to clean up rough jig saw cut out. Or router baseplate bearing and straight bit
Love making boxes. Who doesn't need a box. They display the unique qualities of wood in useful, practical, or not, ways. I like making shadow boxes

Just go do it everyday. Me/my dog live in urban/residential, retired 10 yrs, and there is not one wooded area dog/I have not explored in 5 mile radius, and @ 81 dog/I are in the "woods" everyday being 5 yr old's and return to garage and woodwork create until time cook supper for my sweetheart
