In South Africa, paleontology has been dominated by white people. Lazarus Kgasi is changing that dynamic β and coloring in the picture of the world our distant ancestors once inhabited. n.pr/49WF6w1

States can do this now. Pass laws stating that if you worked for ICE at any time after, say, Jan 8, 2026: you are permanently ineligible for a driverβs license or for employment by state or local governments or any private employer that receives state funding.
Alex Pretti, wearing a green sweater with his VA badge on.
This is Alex Pretti.
This morning he was murdered by ICE. Six ICE agents held him down and shot him at point blank range. Alex was a nurse and researcher at the VA.
Our thoughts are with his loved ones and we stand united in action calling for the abolishment of ICE.

Tomorrow's front page of the Minnesota Star Tribune: Jan. 25, 2026
This is an "administrative warrant". It's not signed by a judge and is therefore unlawful. ICE agents carry stacks of these around in their cars and just fill them out on the fly.
Make sure everyone knows what this looks like, as they have already started going door-to-door in some neighborhoods.
Is it just me or is that a lot of smog?π€π€π€
Either way, can't wait for November. Vote against the fascists on Tuesday. Godzilla: Minus Zero on Friday.
I low-key hate how relevant Christopher Priest's Black Panther run is right now.
Result from the Mammoth Site #paleostream! This has been our first mammoth steppe formation stream, dwelling into some the classic giants of the Pleistocene. This site in South Dakota offered a unique opportunity is that is has so much stuff preserved in situ that we can...
For #fossilfriday, The New York Times has written a good article about the Paleontological Research Institution, what the museum means to the field of Paleontology, and its current financial situation (much improved even from a few weeks ago).

The National Risk Index (v1.20), a project that I spent a good chunk of the last 2 years of my life is now up and live. We did so much work on improving the previous version and Iβm so very proud of the result. I am privileged to have been a part of it and the team tha we had working on itβ¦.

Does that mean it's more *important*? To be determined. The Tea Party mattered mostly because of how it took over the GOP like a toxic virus, driving it to far-right extremism and laying the foundation for Trumpism. We don't yet know what effect No Kings will have on the Democratic Party. [3/3]
The Tea Party's biggest distributed event was on tax day 2009, with 750 modestly attended protests. No Kings had 2,600.
Its biggest single gathering was on 9/12/09 in DC, with somewhere between 75K and a few 100K participants. No Kings had 5-7 million.
So: No Kings dwarfs the Tea Party. [2/3]
Reminder: We spent YEARS reading thousands and thousands of articles on the Tea Party and how it was a true expression of the American people's will, and it never mounted anything nearly as big as Saturday's No Kings rallies. [1/3]
This is game changing for the amateur paleontology community.
Happy Birthday!

Charlie Kirk, Not In His Own Words: We Honor The Right-Wing Activist By Making Up Quotes That Sound Much Better, Given The Moment
This Week's Onion Magazine:
This is precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent β and media companies need to start standing up rather than capitulating to it.
After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesnβt like.
These guys are unpopular and dumb as rocks, they did not discover a secret 'I win' button at the heart of all politics labeled 'mean tweets' or 'cancel elections.'
Keep speaking, keep writing, keep marching, keep voting, force them to show the country what they are.
In North Carolina right now the Democrat running for Senate - in a state Trump won *three times* (I hate it too) - is leading by 6-8 points.
'Oh, but they'll cancel elections' - then force them to cancel elections and radicalize the normies and then march with the radicalized normies.
In short, force them to try to rule by naked force because they *do not* have enough force and the very nakedness of it will mean they have less and less.
The Civil Rights movement overcame far more with far less, if we had a fraction of their courage, we'll win.
We're already seeing grand juries refuse to indict and regular juries refuse to convict because of their shoddy evidence and transparent political aims. Keep doing that.
More protests are planned, another No Kings rally on October 18. Go, be present, be seen, do not let them manufacture consent.
