Single enzyme found to control formation of immune cells critical for health A new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, its Bloomberg~Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that an enzyme involved in protein translation is essential for circulating immune cells, called monocytes, to mature into tissue-resident macrophages, a specialized population of immune cells that maintain organ health by clearing dead cells and debris.

A single enzyme, DHPS, has been identified as essential for the maturation and long-term survival of tissue-resident macrophages, impacting immune function and tissue health across multiple organs. doi.org/hbkvzw

Five minutes more exercise and 30 minutes less sitting could help millions live longer Research finds minor changes in physical activity could hugely reduce number of premature deaths Just five extra minutes of exercise and half an hour less sitting time each day could help millions of people live longer, according to research highlighting the potentially huge population benefits of making even tiny lifestyle changes. Until now, evidence about reducing the number of premature deaths assumed that everyone must meet specific targets, overlooking the positives of even minor increases in physical activity. I've never broken a bone (*knocks on wood*), but I hear it's excruciating. Perhaps its some comfort that the neurons responsible for that pain also help the bone heal? Chewing the fat: a novel mechanism for lipolysis Nature Metabolism, Published online: 08 January 2026; doi:10.1038/s42255-025-01426-3When the brain detects ongoing fuel depletion, sympathetic nervous system outflow to white adipose tissue induces lipolysis to mobilize fuel. Yet there exists a subset of โ€˜stable adipocytesโ€™ that resist lipolysis via this mechanism. The discovery of a novel lipolysis mechanism reshapes our understanding of how body energy requirements are met in times of need.

Signalling from adipose tissue to the brain is not just about leptin Nature Metabolism, Published online: 15 April 2025; doi:10.1038/s42255-025-01277-yA Nature Metabolism study shows that, under acute stress, fatty acids liberated by lipolysis of white fat cells cause release from local macrophages of the growth-differentiation factor GDF15, which, in turn, binds to the receptor GFRAL in the brain, evoking anxiety.

Neural pathway in mice sheds light on how the brain regulates learned immune responses The brain of humans and other animals is known to contribute to the protection of the body from infections. Past studies have unveiled the existence of the so-called conditioned immune response (CIR), which is a form of Pavlovian conditioning that entails the formation of mental associations between specific sensory stimuli (e.g., a specific odor, taste, etc.) and immunomodulatory agents (i.e., a substance that influences the immune system).

A neural pathway in mice has been identified that mediates the retrieval of conditioned immune responses, highlighting the brain's role in linking sensory experiences to immune function. doi.org/g8383h

Microglia reprogramming offers novel strategy to combat melanoma brain metastases Brain metastases are one of the most severe complications of melanoma, the most aggressive type of skin cancer. Researchers at the Institute for Neurosciences (IN), a joint center of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Miguel Hernรกndez University (UMH) in Elche, have identified a strategy to slow their progression, which could improve the response to current treatments.

Reprogramming microglia to block the Rela/NF-kB pathway shows promise in reducing melanoma brain metastases and enhancing immunotherapy efficacy in preclinical models. doi.org/g839r5
