Let Jill have the cool older veteran arc, let her have a relationship with Grace, let her return to the city where she lived and worked. I think there's more you can do with that stuff if she's in those shoes instead
Grace is great tho, in spite of the gender trappings going on here, and I hope the series can kinda let some new characters take over for a while
Also also reaffirming my stance that Jill Valentine should've been in the Leon Kennedy role here? For a dozen reasons it makes way more sense. And the only reason she isn't is basically misogyny??

Anyway, venting all this to get my disappointment out and soldier on. I had my treats, now uncle Capcom wants me to eat my vegetables (reminding me they made Resident Evil 6)
Like there's a gameplay feature that soon pops up to confirm that we've totally shifted gears in what I assume Capcom intended as a cool thing but which to me was literally like "awwww man"
Reached the point in Resident Evil 9 where, as critics warned, it drops off and I know folk say Resi games usually do in their back halves but the contrast isn't usually so stark?
Like, it's not become terrible or anything but going from pure series best stuff to THIS in a single cutscene is wild
I long for games to have their Carpenter's The Thing or Cronenberg's The Fly, the sort of remake that reimagines the source so thoroughly it takes on a whole new life of its own. I honestly don't know if we've had such a thing? Instead I think we're stuck doing Van Sant Psycho
Yeah, I think re-imaginings and retllings are an essential and valuable artistic pursuit to be clear! But what is maybe really disappointing in games is how few "remakes" are truly that. They're often these Frankenstein creations that graft shiny tech onto the same old bones
So when I come out and say "we don't need this" or "this sucks" about a remake, what I'm usually speaking to is how we're discarding so many ideas, tools and lessons in the pursuit of a singular notion of what a game can or is allowed to be
Remakes are a way in which we continue to flatten the idea of what a mainstream game can be (often third person "cinematic" action), by re-imagining all games, past, present and future, into the same shape so that the collective cultural consensus of what is "best" becomes tiresomely narrow
Yeah I think my own personal desire to push back on remakes is because of the role they play in furthering the idea that "better graphics = better game" which has shaped games forever but increasingly so in an age of homogeneity where photo real visuals are the main feature of many mainstream games
now seems like a good time to remind people Xbox, and by extension all Microsoft-owned publishers, are on the BDS list
The best time to boycott Xbox and Microsoft was when BDS called for it, the next best time is now. Focused, targeted boycotts work, this one is working, and all you got to do to support it is go play other games. Literally the least you could do in this moment in history
