Love colleagues in US fighting the good fight on fertility.

Hate journos saying this: β€œThe fertility rate is a statistic describing whether each generation has enough children to replace itself β€” about 2.1 kids per woman”

No. It’s just a statistic. 2.1 as β€œenough” is a *bad* interpretation of it.

I hate the term β€œbigorexia” almost as much as I hate the marketing of β€œman sized” tissue boxes.

Overlooking different manifestations of body dysmorphia has always been a political choice and not a function of lack of evidence / visibility (cf Mary Beard on ancient Greek statues we’ve all seen)

"Japan will need far more workers in the coming decades to maintain even modest growth."

A major problem with our economic system is that it requires perpetual population [worker] growth to function. Increasing political efforts to force births cannot be disconnected from this.

If you think birthrates are a problem then you have a problem but birthrates aren’t it. Probably it’s a policy problem that you’re too chic to address.

As birthrates tumble, some progressives say the left needs to offer ideas and solutions The US and other countries face aging, shrinking populations. Conservatives have shaped debate over the issue. Some liberals say it's time for progressives to weigh in.

Glad to see @lesja.bsky.social quoted here, but the premise that the left isn't in the convo about birth rates & things that help families...🀬. The left talks about parental leave, about childcare, about housing, about wages, about healthcare ALL THE TIME. 1/

French headlines today: demographic panic as deaths > births in 2025

Political flashpoints mentioned: immigration as current driver of population growth & pension fragility

Will response buck trend towards anti-women, white supremacist policies and focus on system adaptation for the existing pop?

A male MEP in Germany is trying to connect male contraceptives to promote anti-abortion (false) narratives. πŸ™„

As @joestrong.bsky.social perfectly put it: 'male contraceptives must *never* be a tool to undermine women + people who can become pregnant.'

Incoming male contraceptives (after decades of being 'just around the corner') must be rooted in the politics reproductive justice. Otherwise, they risk becoming yet another instrument of misogyny and eugenics that poisons sexual and reproductive health

Instrumentalising male contraceptives because of anti-abortion politics is bad. Not only does it weaponise contraceptives as a tool to undermine abortion, it is fundamentally anti bodily autonomy.

Male contraceptives must *never* be a tool to undermine women + people who can become pregnant

X is the megaphone of 21st century fascism and authoritariansim. It has poisoned public debate. It is a tool for bullying, abuse, and assault. X needs to disappear from our discourse. When people and institutions post there, it gives X credibility. It keeps it relevant. It's time to stop.

Reform β€˜proudly embracing’ anti-abortion politics, experts warn Campaigners accuse party of β€˜fast becoming the political refuge for anti-abortion hardliners’

Reform has seen a few anti-abortion folks join them, but this broader anti-rights ideology includes racist, anti-immigration, anti-trans, anti-LGBTQI approaches and actions. 1/

For most people, reproduction is relational and involves other people (not to mention communities). We ignore the interpersonal, social, and sturctural obstacles to having children at our peril.

The lack of data is a huge contributor to that. Making a problem invisible doesn't make it go away! 3/3

24.09.2025 11:56 πŸ‘ 4 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

But we are falling short when we talk about barriers to people having the children they want and focusing on solely on women [and other ppl who can get pregnant].

Policies then burden women with 'solutions', and it all reeks of the misogyny of once again trying to control women's bodies 2/3

Let’s stop asking why women aren’t having children and ask, for once: why aren’t men? | Rhiannon Lucy Coslett On the whole, men I’ve spoken to – like women – want children. But a host of issues, from housing to mental health, is getting in the way, says Guardian columnist Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett

Great to speak to @theguardian.com's Rhiannon Cosslett about men, children, and fertility

tl;dr: I think any notion of a fertility 'crisis' is a load of inflammatory, unscientific nonsense 1/3
