Reminder: All it would take to end the murder of American citizens by an untrained government goon squad is 16 Republicans in Congress voting with Dems to defund ICE (or 23 to impeach and remove Trump β 3 in House & 20 in Senate). Thatβs it. 23 Americans can vote for the public and end all of this.
This law group led by @rickpildes.bsky.social had me write for their 100 Ideas series on US democracy
My idea: the rule of law cannot coexist with this level of wealth concentration. Once Musk, Bezos, Zuck, & a few others bend the knee, the authoritarian consolidates too much power
New paper with @chloethurston.bsky.social

Universities should be subsidizing these kinds of visitors even more - contact theory but for elected officials whose understanding of elite higher ed is mostly drawn from the Fox News Cinematic Universe wapo.st/4aQQABT
Me telling people to not circulate my working paper
Taking sage advice of @unlawfulentries.bsky.social Iβm posting cover of forthcoming book Dark Concrete: Black Power Urbanism and the American Metropolis
I've really appreciated people sending me pictures of my Book Baby out in the world. Please keep them coming!! π
Political violence, post-pandemic one-party rule, vast economic inequality, and immigration backlash? The 2020s are the 1920s all over again--and that may show us a way out. Adapted from my book, to be published next week. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/06/o...

𧡠Authoritarianism, Democratization, and Coalition Politics.
The consensus around here is, more or less, that the United States is currently a consolidating authoritarian regime controlled by a mix of reactionary populists and fascists.
I'll be returning to campus this fall as the inaugural Tony and Teddie Brown Associate Professor of Public Policy.
I am excited to have earned tenure at Duke and humbled to receive this specific endowed chair (more on that later).
I've been sitting on this news for a while now...

that said, yours provides much-needed context. thanks for writing!
Iβm trying to figure out the right way to say this, because: Look, the CPB closing is devastating, and I donβt in any way want to blow even a wisp of smoke that it isnβt. But twice today, Iβve seen people express how sad they are that all of public television and radio is over. Not true! (1/3)
New from me: I recently joined the Civic CafΓ© podcast (APSAβs Civic Engagement Section) to talk about my career path and research. The common thread is building a stronger democracy by helping both people and government strengthen their civic muscles. open.spotify.com/episode/5865...
thanks for reading!
I don't know why this paper is open in my tabs, or who sent it to me, but it's important! It's about the Democrats' faith that good policy will yield political support, which appears, with some examination, to be wrong.
Iβm standing between two people holding one of their protest signs which reads, βI POUR MY COCKTAILS SERVED UP β NO ICE!!!β
A man in a flannel shirt holds a sign with β8647β between his parents who are sitting in mobility aids. Their signs read βGRANDMAβS PISSED OFF!β and βDUE PROCESS FOR ALL!β
Ben and I talk to a man in a mobility aid with a sign reading βCutting Medicare and Medicaid WILL KILL people like me!β
Just finished up at the Evanston No Kings rally. It was safe, peaceful, and a show of solidarity by *at least* 1,000 people.
Go to your local protest. Donβt let this administration scare you. Stand with your community when our leaders wonβt.
As we say on the internet, "some personal news."
After 39 years on the job I am retiring as an NYU professor.
In this thread I will take a few moments to reflect on my academic career.
Spoiler alert: I am not leaving the field, or the fight for a public service press. 1/
Heading back from Providence reading the brilliant people I met over the past three days. Starting with this recent piece by @susglickman.bsky.social about the historical and ideological roots of Bidenβs CHIPS Act, and the political economy baggage they come with.
The Political Economy of Finance Summer School 2025 at the Watson Institute has been off to a great start. We had @thunen.bsky.social on the dollar empire (no pic sadly but fantastic talk, and shirt); now politics of debt and debt relief with @chloethurston.bsky.social.
(I would appreciate it if you shared this because it feels weird to write something like this and then have no one read it)
Slightly larger wasps? Thankfully I never had to figure that part out - they seem to have gone away on their own?
This is the way!
These are the worst! We ended up releasing thousands of parasitic microwasps that attack pantry moth eggs. It worked really well - you can order trichogramma wasps online.
