Research confirms Galveston red wolf DNA link A new study finds that Gulf Coast coyotes are preserving red wolf genetic ancestry, aided by unexpectedly high survival rates in remote Louisiana wetlands.

Article on our Gulf Coast canid paper. Our paper didn't confirm anything with Galveston Island coyotes. The local paper is making the connection here. There's a gradient of mean red wolf ancestry (13-38%) in coyote populations along the coast and our Ecosphere paper looked at morphology and ecology.

My personal humble-brag for this paper: We tracked down an archeological expert on the time/region of a precolonial bottleneck we detected (Hi, Dr. Dye!). Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

A new study from the WCC's Integrative Ecology and Coexistence Lab reveals that the unique body traits and high survival of coastal coyotes along the Texas–Louisiana border allow them to carry red wolf ancestry decades after the species was extirpated from the region.

Our new Ecosphere paper shows Gulf Coast canids are a wetland coyote ecotype shaped by red wolf introgression - tall, lanky, small‑headed, and big eared coyotes that eat lots of nutria and have high survival which helps preserve red wolf genetics.

Marshland mashup: Red wolf-coyote hybrids adapt to coastal Louisiana β€’ Louisiana Illuminator A new kind of creature is making its home where the prairies of Southwest Louisiana turn into brackish coastal marshes.

A recently discovered canid is making their home along the coast of LA. They’re classified as coyotes, but Red Wolf ancestry gives them bigger ears, and longer legs.

Scientists are working to better understand these hybrids and what they mean for the future of canids in the region.

5 endangered red wolves arrive in New Jersey to boost survival efforts Five critically endangered red wolves have just landed in New Jersey as part of a rare β€œwolf swap” program aimed at saving the species. With only 16 left in the wild, the wolves traveled from North Carolina to the Wolf Conservation Center, where experts hope they’ll breed and help restore a healthy ecosystem. FOX 5 NY's Teresa Priolo has the details.

It truly takes a village to save a species! Howls of thanks to Pilots To The Rescue for providing safe and stress-free transport to Caroline, Jacques, Martha and her family.🐺
