Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Planting season is now well under way and we've been busy maintaining the large plantation at Gorpley reservoir. The trees were planted in 2020 and the site already looks like a beautiful woodland.

Here are some photos taken from our site visit in July.

The woman who bested Big Oil Sarah Finch's victory in the Supreme Court last summer sunk billions of pounds worth of oil and gas projects.

A nice profile of @sarahfinch.bsky.social, the campaigner who - more than any other - has stopped fossil fuel extraction in its tracks in the UK

#BanWindfarmsOnProtectedPeatland - Here is the @naturalengland.bsky.social Peat depth map for #WalshawMoor, intended site of 300MW #CalderdaleWindfarm, which has erased most of the blanket bog from their habitats map and produced a poor quality interpolated peat depth map of their own

We are grateful as always for all the help and support from our brilliant volunteers who make it possible to grow many our own trees at our community tree nursery in Mytholmroyd instead of buying all the trees we need from commercial nurseries for our hedge, woodland creation and #NFM projects πŸŒ±πŸŒ³πŸ™πŸ’šπŸ˜

Gorpley Reservoir tree planting site maintenance day Please come and help our team with site maintenance including replacing broken stakes, cable ties and replanting any trees that have failed.

We will be out doing maintenance on the big tree planting site at Gorpley reservoir this Thursday 6th March. We will be replanting trees and replacing tree stakes where high winds or stray sheep have caused some damage and we would really appreciate some help.

Productive day at the nursery on Friday with gusty 45mph winds and a few showers just for good measure. Thank you to all our #volunteers who came and helped this week. Julie usually works on a Friday but chose to volunteer with us as part of her work World Pledge Day so it worked out well for us πŸŒπŸ’šπŸŒ³

A big shout out to Deborah and Toby for volunteering at our community tree nursery. We spent a few hours getting trees ready for delivery and for a planting session with a cub scout group. Unfortunately, the planting got postponed just as we got all the trees ready for loading 😬 All in a days work!

Four speckled curlew eggs in a nest

Curlews, the largest European wading bird, nest on the moors in the spring. Curlew numbers have declined with numbers halved from 40 years ago. Please sign and share the Parliamentary petition to ban windfarms on protected peatlands and save the Curlews.

Peatland is a vital ecosystem that forms over 1000's of years and acts as a carbon sink by storing vast amounts of carbon and is also home to many rare plants, insects and birds on the RSPB red list at risk of extinction.
