So much about the night was moving, in particular, seeing campesinos arriving for the Mass from rural areas hours away in packed pickups with no covering on a very rainy night.

On that note, was good to see @RepMcGovern in attendance for the Mass and procession. As a congressional staffer in the 90โ€™s, McGovern devoted years investigating the UCA killings & has been a fierce advocate for human rights in Latin Americs.

The Jesuits were just 6 of scores of clergy & religious executed during the civil war by a US-funded & trained military dictatorship. As a current UCA student told our group, โ€œThey killed these clergy because they realized they could get away with it. The US didnโ€™t stop them.โ€

Yesterday marked the 35th anniversary of the martyrdom, by military death squad, of the 6 Jesuits & 2 woman at the Universidad Centroamericana in El Salvador. We pilgrimaged 16 hours from Belize w 20 students for the celebrations & it was so worth it.
