Made it to the Art of Manga exhibit at the de Young yesterday. The Taniguchi Jiro room blew my mind!
A decorative, graphic winter scene in deep blue and muted gold tones. A huge tree dominates the image, its trunk and sweeping branches rendered in bold black silhouettes that curl and twist like calligraphy. Fine, delicate twigs fill the canopy with dense, lace-like patterns, dotted with tiny golden, star-shaped needles. Beneath the tree, stylised snowbanks rise in flowing curves, casting long blue shadows across a smooth, pale ground. The overall mood is serene and magical, blending nature and ornament in Eyvind Earle’s distinctive mid-century fairy-tale style.

This issue really, truly clicked for me, and I think as great as Toxic Avenger was (and this book's previous two issues as well), @mattbors.bsky.social and @tristanwright.bsky.social have the potential for something even more bonkers, relevant, gross, funny, human, absurd, etc. Also, Junkyard!
