Iβm pleased to share that Iβll be co-directing (with Nadine Sika, Sarah Anne Rennick and saloua zerhouni) a workshop this summer for APSA-MENA, focusing on decolonization and intellectual extractivism. The deadline is in a week. Distribute widely and apply!

Western hypocrisy on Palestine trickles down to other issues, including women's rights where there seems to be two sets of rules-- one for the West, and one for the rest. My latest article addresses women and freedom of religion (no paywal).

On the origins of the word "gauze"
Far-right Israeli minister Bezalel Smotrich has backed a proposal for the βvoluntary migrationβ of Palestinians to other countries, saying the state of Israel is βirreconcilableβ with the existence of an independent Gaza.
A recent publication in the APSA MENA newsletter on the judiciary in Lebanon.
"Mass marches and direct actions in the U.S., including large scale blockades and sit-ins, have drawn historic levels of participation in recent days, as Israelβs genocidal assault on Gaza has continued to intensify."
This is absolutely insane.
"The US and Israel are exploring options for the future of the Gaza Strip, including the possibility of a multinational force that may involve American troops if Israeli forces succeed in ousting Hamas" - kinda like the US Marines in Beirut c. 1983?
Multiple things can be true at once:
1. Oct 7th was the worst collective trauma Jews have experienced in our lifetimes
2. The war on Gaza is a horror
3. Antisemitism is rising
4. Islamophobia is rising
Those trying to use one of these to cancel others are making things worse
And the world powers are silent...
"To the people in Gaza and all of Palestine:Β we have no platitudes, no pity, no piety, no passivity; we pronounce instead our sadness and rage."
βTo the people in Gaza and all of Palestine: your light nourishes our joy; your darkness ignites our consciousness.
To the people in Gaza and all of Palestine: we love you without any of the conditions imposed by the West.β

I love the Irish. Wonder if there are any jobs for me in Ireland? I hear Dublin is lovely.
As the horrors in Gaza escalate, I have a special contempt for those spouting some version of "war is hell." What's happening in Gaza isn't war, it's vengeful murder. And one only need hear the genocidal rhetoric coming out of Tel Aviv right now to know it's going to get worse.
A bar chat that shows how many adults and children have been killed each day in Gaza, according to the Gazan Health Ministry. Data is through Oct. 25, 2023
At least 1,500 children under the age of 10, including 600 under the age of four, have been killed in Gaza since Oct. 7, according to a list released on Thursday by the health ministry there. More than 100 were listed as less than a year old. nyti.ms/45KtzKJ
Scott Long uploaded his entire library of books on Palestine/Israel to the cloud, in digital form (mostly pdf and epub). It's a little over 1700 books. Nearly all are in English. You can download any that interest you individually, or the whole library (about 13 GB). And feel free to share this.
The only real defense that Palestinians have against Israeli violence are their voices and stories sparking outrage abroad.
It's not a coincidence that IDF is assassinating Palestinian journalists and destroying communication infrastructure
"President Bidenβs refusal to push back meaningfully has horrified peopleβin particular, Muslim and Arab Americans....The sense of shock and betrayal is real and shattering. And it is leading many Muslims and Arabs to a conclusion ... that they can no longer vote for Joe Biden."
No it is not from a song. I saw it on FB
In the past couple of year, my prayer has been "give me the confidence of a mediocre white man."
