Here is the "effective payline" for each institute, estimated (by Claude) as the percentile where one can expect 80% probability of funding from a logistic regression fit. The effective payline has gone from a historic ~12% to 6% in 2025.

I had the same question - I'm assuming the model is struggling to fit a floor effect???
GOOD NEWS! Researchers at Stanford University have developed a UNIVERSAL vaccine known as GLA-3M-052-LS+OVA, that protects against a wide range of respiratory viruses, bacteria AND even allergens. The vaccine is delivered intranasally AND provides broad protection in the lungs for several MONTHS.
"This is where the loop began. Unlike a human reviewer, who can compromise when the authors explicitly acknowledge a limitation in a manuscript, the AI did not budge. It latched on to the neck of its victim suggesting an entire set of over 20 new suggestions."

AHRQ has been hit even harder than NIH. They have no grant making staff at all.
๐งฌ ๐ง While working with our lab ( w/ @huda-akil.bsky.social ) on bulk transcriptional profiling meta-analysis projects, Duy also spent a semester teaching himself single cell RNA-Seq analysis, which we then incorporated into a submitted preprint.
You should hire him.
๐งฌ๐ง Within our lab, he has completed two genomics meta-analysis projects (viral encephalitis, glioblastoma) and improved our analysis pipeline.
He won an award to present his work on the main floor of the Society for Neuroscience Conference, and co-authored 3 papers, 1 preprint, & 3 protocols. ๐
More about Duy:
He is a talented scientific writer and public speaker, experienced coder, and careful researcher. He is completely comfortable teaching himself complex content and parsing the logic behind experimental designs.
Here's the link to his LinkedIn Page:

Is anyone looking for a highly talented research assistant?
One of my students, Duy Manh Nguyen, will be graduating in May'26 with a dual degree in Biological Chemistry & Statistics and 6+ years of research experience (wet lab, genomics, clinical).
His dream is to pursue an MD/PhD.
In this new report, @ksavin.bsky.social, and @calliefreitag.bsky.social and I explain how Trump 2.0 and DOGE built up new barriers to the already-difficult process of getting disability benefits.
Let's talk about what we found, and what we recommend to address the issues. ๐งต
In todayโs episode of โinsurance companies are the worstโ
@bcbsm.bsky.social & Michigan Medicine canโt come to an agreement leaving ~70% of commercially insured Michiganders possibly out of network 7/1.
Their entire goal is to make $ yet are painting a non profit hospital as the villain.

Oooh, interesting work. BPA is creepy. We had folks in our lab looking at effects of BPA on offspring behavior too.
Degus (Octodon degus) have spikes that grow on their penises at puberty.
I also used to monitor rat penises, which develop a looser, more mobile foreskin around puberty ("prepucial opening").
Well, technically penis *spikes*
I used to measure rodent penises

I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing โreviewedโ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.

Thatโs 83 five year NIH R01 grants burned in minutes due to error, aka poor execution of this unnecessary war which serves only to make the world more dangerous.

Apparently my submission for the annual Wild Green Memes For Ecological Fiends (WGMFEF) meme charity battle was too esoteric this year... ๐
So I'm sharing it here. #TrashMobForever

I just made an account and voted for this biology laboratory made of LEGO to "promote biological research and inspire more people into the world of biology". They need 10K votes. Reposting and/or voting below would be helpful. ๐ค

bioRxiv continues to grow โ a brief spike and lag in the pandemic (details of which are included) but a steady increase in submissions since then. % revisions, license choice, etc. all fairly constant. 0.1% withdrawal rate is comparable to journal retraction rates 2/n
I would love to have a medium for "living articles" and have definitely considered using bioRxiv for this purpose.
I think this survey is missing the answer "2 weeks before a grant's progress report is due" ๐
Instructions for fixing the default on facebook - I'm not sure how to access it on threads and Instagram (I'm not on either), but I've read that a similar default is buried there too. I can try and find the instructions for changing it...
If you dig deep into the default settings for Meta, there is a toggle for viewing political content. The default is off. Once you switch it on, the change in content is huge.
... and that setting just happened to be quietly set as default during the months leading up to the 2024 election...
