Another recent acquisition...
I remember Stuart McLean, not very long before his passing, talking one night about his friends, the singers Kate and Anna McGarrigle - Kate herself had passed not long before - and he played "Mendocino". Driving alone in the dark on a lonely backroad at 11PM, it was the loveliest, loneliest moment.
Memorable but necessarily a good one. Saw Saving Private Ryan with my sister in law because she wanted to see it too. In shock after the film ended, I burst into tears while driving the car home and nearly crashed into a telephone pole. Had to pull over and sit there weeping copiously.
My neighbour either has forgotten to take down his Halloween stuff or else he's planning a *really* interesting Nativity scene.
Was sad to learn of the passing of Canadian historian Donald E. Graves a few days ago. Graves was a master storyteller and meticulous researcher and his books in the War of 1812 are go-to sources for their respective topics. He will be greatly missed.
An Olympics can have a deficit no more than a man can have a baby.....
Picked up a bit of local history at the church bazaar
Thanks Chitown! We'll do it for the Great Lakes twin cities!
Stay strong Chicago!
- Toronto.
Okay done! Would recommend!
Unquestionably
Such a rarity. Tim Cook -- passionate ambassador for Canadian military history, and someone who was able to articulate and disseminate so well to so many. His loss is a real blow, made more painful at the young age of 54. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
No gold ones either, except for one in the Winter Olympics.
Quite enjoying this so far because the author speaks not only of the E.F. but the lives of Great Lakes sailors in general in the era in which it's set. Discusses earlier disasters and the shipping industry both on the lakes and in the Port towns.
And so I bought a copy.
I helped a tiny bit when she was writing it. She came to our archives at #PortsToronto for information.
New acquisition.
Latest acquisition. By Paul Myers, writer, podcaster, musician and darned decent person. #books #JohnCandy #biographies #PaulMyers
Even have a baseball Hall of Fame in St. Mary's, ON if I recall correctly.
MAGA MAPLE declared that a youth that asked a question at a public event should be "spanked."
Danielle Smith accused the school board of being "viciously compliant" when they released the list of books the MAGA morons were trying to ban.
In Alberta, the kids are alright.
"Banished From Our Home" historical fiction aimed at younger readers about the deportation of the Acadians. Done like a diary.
Aislin cartoon RE Olympic security in '76: Post-marathon podium with medalled Gold and Silver winners stand while a gas-masked soldier dressed in full gear and rifle is on his walkie-talkie: "Terribly sorry sir", he says, "but in the process of escorting the Marathon I seem to have won the bronze."
The last known surviving veteran of Canada's Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Regiment from the Second World War has passed away. Lance Corporal Tony Mastromatteo was 104.#Cdnhistory #WW2Veterans #Canadianhistory www.chch.com/chch-news/se...
The introduction on its own is the size of a small novel.
New acquisition, bought on a whim. At 800+ pages god only knows when I'll read it.
Hope it sells well!
Oh my pleasure. I love books like these. I think I have to order from the publisher though?
Exactly the kind of history book I look for.
