Supporters of the by-law are saying that submissions are still open for written statements. If you havenβt written in to express your opposition, you may still have time. It wonβt hurt to send something, and given that efforts are being made to solicit support still, itβs essential to try.
Melissa Martin column βreining in right to rally not a good lookβ with large map of charter free zones by Buck Doyle
Good day to be a subscriber to @winnipegfreepress.com
Hey Iβm just some guy, though. Letβs ask some experts
If you havenβt looked today, Buckβs map has been updated to include more of the categories of βvulnerable infrastructureβ specified in the by-law, like dentistsβ offices and pharmacies. No, Iβm not kidding.
A 100m buffer around all educational institutions would make it possible to enforce this measure in the courtyard of City Hall. $500 ticket for unpermitted protest there, for first-time offenders.
My @winnipegfreepress.com column today on the lessons of Minneapolis, where we can find the hope we all need:

I asked Mayor Gillingham Wednesday whether he will continue to maintain an account on what used to be Twitter.
He said heβs having that discussion with his staff.
The mayor expressed dismay with the comments and vitriol on Facebook and X but said he must have means to get messages out.
We built a network that was meant to sacrifice some convenience and proximity for frequent service, and then Mayor Gillingham and Councillor Lukes didnβt deliver frequent service. Maybe if they werenβt so focused on suburban road expansion they could fund the damn bus.
Introduce yourself with five concerts you've attended
Black Sabbath (seen both Dio and Ozzy as singers)
Tegan and Sara
Leonard Cohen
Blue Oyster Cult
The Flaming Lips
The ones that got away: Pixies (tickets sold to fast)
Rage Against the Machine and Run the Jewels (COVID)
Then what will?
And why ignore actual data from anywhere else that has fixed/is working on fixing the problem?
She's just completely lying, or being completely uninformed. Both are awful for an elected official.
Another person is dead thanks to Councillor Lukes and Mayor Gillinghamβs endless pursuit of maximal vehicular throughput in heavily pedestrianized areas.
This time at Osborne and Roslyn.

We have to stop this from happening. Other places have succeeded.
Oh okay so within the past few weeks, two kids got hit by cars leaving shool, someone else was hit crossing a big street on foot, and someone got run over walking on a crosswalk near me. Cool. Very cool.
βthis is the most climate negative budget weβve seen in a decade.β This writer agrees with @policyalternatives.ca #Budget2025

100% Imagine if we frontpaged every time people were almost hit at a crosswalk, every time a vehicle sped through a red light nearly hitting pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles, or let alone all the times people HAVE been hit. Like the EA at St. George School doing the walking school bus.
A 68 year old in the North End was killed in the middle of the day yesterday by the driver of a Ram 1500 and I think if that driver had used any other weapon weβd be hearing about it on the front page but because they used a big truck Iβm not sure itβll make the paper.
The city skipped adding any bike infrastructure when they redid Selkirk a couple years ago, in favour of keeping this a high-speed, high-traffic corridor for people who live further out.
Keeping property tax increases low while piling on per-household fees is regressive taxation to keep taxes low for the people with the most ability to pay.
We have just over a month to wrest any concessions from the ghouls of austerity
This shouldnβt happen. We donβt have to accept it.
If youβre wondering whether we still need these changes, a driver hit Robβs ghost bike THIS MORNING
Meanwhile thereβs council candidates in Elmwood-East Kildonan who want to get rid of school zones. Vote Emma instead.
You can reach the Minister of Justice at 204-945-3727. minjus@manitoba.ca also works.
Yeah, I walk to work daily. About 20 minutes. Mostly residential, but one major intersection.
Still, over the last year-ish I've had multiple close calls with cars going through red lights, stop signs, turning aggressively, etc...
Too many cars don't stop BEFORE the sidewalk too.

The struggle of writing sometimes is all the distractions. And not just fun memes, but just the constant drive to need to doomscroll. My writing time is often also my time to catch up with the world and it's a hard balance. I sometimes find myself too distraught to write a fun fantasy story.
