I’ve been reading a lot about accessibility for all sorts of reasons. Something that keeps coming up is ‘designing for cognitive load’.
What is the cognitive load of war, war, environmental catastrophe, political catastrophe, observation of near constant suffering, trying to teach/learn math?
An Indeed commercial about finding a COBOL engineer to fix a malfunctioning assembly line. Followed by an AI commercial about - I stopped paying attention.
Because some of us generally don’t think it should be forcefully used in such a widespread and reckless way, given all of its costs.
Or at all for most things.
We’re replacing things that humans have developed, learned, and understood for hundreds and thousands of years with nothing.
PreTeXt on GitHub Pages is worth a look.
Losing stars, gaining starlings.
We’d be out of oil before making that back up.
It’s probably not legal to steal $254M from a state employees pension system for a one time expense, is it?
Not The Onion. 😭
COMMENT Al agents are 'aeroplanes for the mind": five ways to ensure that scientists are responsible pilots As artificial-intelligence systems take on more of the scientific workflow, the central goal should not be complete automation, but designing platforms that preserve creativity, responsibility and surprise. Leaving the plane in the hangar and scrapping it for parts.
Yeah. That part.
Can we start referring to GAI as SVR because instead of creating intelligence it creates a selfish virtual reality where you get what you want at whatever cost to others it brings.
I think there must have been a sign error.

Monday I fumbled my way through the building door on the phone, carrying two bags, past a student, and spilled my coffee down my arm (it gets worse).
Tuesday, I kicked over my coffee while feeding the chickens in the morning before leaving.
Today I did not spill my coffee.
These are pretty reasonable requests.

Someone I trust said “you should probably learn python”… ouch.
These pointy finger clock numbers look too much like the state of Oklahoma and I wasn’t ready for that.

The tool is the flaw, can we stop now?
While nervously over preparing something, this is good company.

I currently have too much time to do nothing, but not enough time to do anything.
For sure, lately my students have been responsible number-pickers though.
I want to address the problem subtly. Though you seem to have focused in on the heart of the matter.
What should I say to my #DataViz class about violin plots?
Weird Al writes hits though.
I love how easy it is to do everything now that technology has made our lives better.
Stop making RAM.
Every day, chickens jump on my shoulder. I know it is love and I wish I could walk around like a pirate all day, toting them around.
(Maybe someone needs chickens?)
