Academics in the U.S.. be honest. If you were graduating with a PhD in the next year, would you pursue an academic career? It's becoming harder & harder to do this work every day.
Specifically interested in hearing from folks at smaller schools, private unis, or community colleges.
Had a wonderful time speaking with Ari Daniel alongside Dick Holmes to share how we map bird territories to answer unique scientific questions at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Take a listen!

shared a bit of my experiences being trans in STEM a bit ago, excited to see the article out!
and cis folks: the statistics here are from *before* the current dumpster fire, just for context. so just imagine for a second how much worse things are now

Hey folks, Iβm going to need you to care about whatβs happening in states like FL, TX, IA, MO, and TN. These are, in my opinion, the most aggressive states towards trans rights and whatever theyβre able to pass, others will try to follow suit.
Fight back and organize with folks within these states

Briefly putting on my hat as @asn-amnat.bsky.social President: The ASN Council has just distributed an updated message to the American Society of Naturalists members with information about actions that can be undertaken to advocate for science, and scientists, within the US:
Public comment is now open for passport gender marker changes.
You can go here to go to each of the three proposed passport rules, and submit comment.
My suggestion: be unique, argue for trans-inclusive policies, against the constitutionality of the changes, etc.

Instead, ask your trans friends if you can help with legal documents, medications, finances, relocation, community connections, finding affirming healthcare, future planning, etc. Or simply tell us you love us & show us you're committed to the work. βπ»π«Άπ»
Telling us that we're valid is to assume we don't feel that we are. That assumption comes from one's own insecurities about parts of themselves they've yet to learn to love & accept. π€·πΌββοΈ
Idk, it just feels like a slap in the face when we've known this all along. The problem is cis ppl not doing the work to accept who THEY are, fully.
Getting to a point where we accept our transness requires us to know ourselves deeply. We know we're valid. Cis ppl rarely do the deep, introspective work that is an inherent part of being trans.
Cis friends - instead of telling the trans ppl you know that they're valid, etc, regardless of our political landscape, tell that to other cis ppl.

1. Did you know that Girl Scouts has, for a long time, accepted trans girls and nonbinary scouts?
Trans kids are under attack. Every year, I make a thread of trans and nonbinary girl scouts you can get your cookies from.
Lets get our cookies from them this year in solidarity!

Today the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a historic hearing on transgender rights. The findings in this case will likely have great implications for the right to healthcare for all trans people in the U.S. See how you can support our communities below!
