I grew up in 40/50s Alberta and remember that grain elevator employees and Gov Agriculture staff took pride in rat-free status with killing rats as part of their jobs. If you saw rats or traces you reported and they came and hunted, maybe under elevators.
Sewing: No folklore, but knowing a finger punch is possible might lend caution. I just have a vivid memory of pain and surprise that the old machine was so much stronger and snappish than I was.

But people would rather stay home than vote for a side that has an intolerable risk of losing. So you would need an argument that persuades them to increase their tolerance of that risk. Modern Americans refuse.
