Through eight scholarly essays focusing on China, Japan, and Korea, the volume examines the role of masks in key public health crises, including the Manchurian plague, the Japanese plague outbreaks, and the colonial medical governance of Korea.
This book explores the deep and complex history of the face mask in East Asia, tracing its origins not only to scientific discovery but also to the profound suffering endured by its people.
