Of course this drained my phone battery so the Q&A was from the floor of my bedroom so I could plug my phone in (the alarms had finally stopped)

I love being a podcaster with a podcast studio I can’t use because the universe is so scared of what I have to say it will knock a whole building offline

Which is how I ended up recording my whole Playthink podcast outdoors in the pouring rain on my balcony on my lunch break with fire alarms in the background while wearing smart sunglasses

The fact that I am at ALL calm and present is an absolute miracle - and it actually turned out well

I had to ask this whole classroom of students to hold while I scrambled through my apartment to find an alternative. Selfie stick, check. Lav mic? Won’t work because it steals the audio output channel too. Ok, then my only charged option is my Meta glasses - controversial but good for disabled folks

40 straight minutes. This thing monologues like a Shakespearean play. “May I have your attention please” x4. “Management has identified an emergency in the building. While this report is being verified, please exit the building…” etc

Impossible to record inside.

It was also pouring.

Limited to specific zones. I could use high pass filters to drown it out.

Mind you, the window was 9-4. They could have done this at any time.

About 10 minutes before the broadcast, they started doing all-building alarms.

5 minutes before, they launched 40 straight minutes of the full alarm.

The window was all day and I didn’t have any other options to reschedule - GDC is next week, this recording was a live salon with an entire class of grad students, the show must go on.

As soon as I got back to my building I heard klaxons in the distance and hall lights were flashing, but mild.

The fire alarm system has been replaced over the last few weeks at great disruption, and I’ve had to sit through hours of the alarms being tested. But there wasn’t much mention of additional audio testing; they just said they’d need to enter specific apartments. Sounded like physical inspections.

I had the most unhinged Mercury Retrograde yesterday. I’d had a lunchtime podcast recording spot set up for weeks with USC (when people ask “how do you do it?”, it’s a lot of “sacrificing breaks and free time surgically”)

But my building communicated that the fire marshal would be here.

Some things are hard to explain

Ilia Malinin’s gala skate was SO fluid, raw, expressive - I can’t think of many other performances like that from male skaters I’ve seen. It felt like he was skating on behalf of his gender and generation, expressing a frustration and pent up emotion in ways society doesn’t teach. so good.

Just watched the Olympic pairs skaters from Georgia do their Mortal Kombat themed gala performance - that was unexpectedly delightful #gamedev candy out of nowhere

Well ok we will keep making them if you keep skating like that 🏅

He’s watching these princes and policies fall and watching his world get very small.
