I'm Tired of Anti-Heroes
What good have they done us?
"But what good have all these anti-hero narratives done for us? Weβve been entertained, sure, but it also feels pretty obvious that theyβve normalized an American masculinity that is selfish, abusive, nihilistic, and ultimately self-destructive."

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

"At once a source of demystification of AI for the recently concerned and an intervention which encourages veteran sceptics to sharpen their criticism, [The AI Con] serves as a call to action to ridicule AI hype as a consumer, argue against it as a citizen, and resist it as a worker."

Head of Signal, Meredith Whittaker, on so-called "agentic AI" and the difference between how it's described in the marketing and what access and control it would actually require to work as advertised.

The photo shows a man with curly hair wearing a white T-shirt with "Marathon of Hope" and a design featuring multiple Canadian maple leaf flags printed on it. He appears to be running or jogging outdoors, with a focused expression. In the background, there is a police car with its lights on, parked near a rocky landscape and some greenery. The scene suggests a determined effort, likely related to Terry Fox's famous cross-Canada run to raise awareness for cancer research.
On this day in 1981, Terry Fox died.
In 1977, he was diagnosed with cancer and had his leg amputated. In 1980, he began his Marathon of Hope. Over $900 million has been raised in his name.

This is a good thread. I believe the word "equivocation"βswitching between two distinct meanings of a word in the middle of an argumentβdescribes the dishonest rhetorical strategy that Parker criticizes. It's useful to recognize & to call that out when we see it.

The disbelief at the collective amnesia is particularly unnerving. A lot of us have seen this script play out beforeβrecently, even! It's unbelievable hearing governments trotting out the same flimsy arguments to start a war with a straight face. How did anyone (older than Gen Z) forget this?

Yeah, this point is well worth articulating explicitly. The utilitarian defence of immigrants & immigration is misguided (and, more importantly, dehumanizing). Please avoid this framing.

This is huge and important. Keep amplifying the harm done by the Trump/Miller zealous, cruel overreach. Donβt bury this.

Canadians reject that they live on 'stolen' Indigenous land, although new poll reveals a generational divide
Canadians living in rural areas the least likely to agree they live on stolen Indigenous land, with urban dwellers the most likely to agree.
In our land acknowledgements we tell people not to use the term 'stolen land' - because that term serves a white guilt fetish and has nothing to do with us. In this article the Post is shadow boxing with their fantasy of what Native people actually want.

The image depicts a vintage scene inside a circus tent, featuring several individuals dressed in colorful, theatrical costumes. A central figure, a clown with a white face, red nose, and green-and-pink ruffled outfit, stands holding a small mirror. Surrounding the clown are other performers, including a man in a maroon outfit adjusting his appearance, another clown in a blue-and-red costume, and a person in a top hat and formal attire. In the foreground, a performer in a yellow-and-red outfit is working with a large black cloth or costume piece. The background shows additional circus performers and props, including hanging costumes and a lively, crowded atmosphere. The overall style suggests an old illustration, possibly from a 19th-century circus or theatrical setting.
On July 12, 1855, some drunk clowns got into a massive brawl with a bunch of firefighters at a Toronto brothel.
By the next day, several firefighters were beaten and the circus was burned to the ground.
This is the story of Toronto's Firemen And Clown Brothel Riot.
