I'm not too familiar with modern anime scenes but I have noticed some anime series becoming WAY more overt with Gundam references for example, and the parts referenced too (Lines like "You hit me! Not even my own father used to hit me!" seems to have fallen in favour of red + 3 times faster jokes)

for instance in big budget western SF, modern Halo seems to have lost a lot of its anime and late 20th century SF influences, and I think modern Star Wars has a bunch of folks working on it unfamiliar with the Flash Gordon serials and WW2 films popular in the 60s

the big fan stuff especially when they write for an existing and just have not experienced what the original works were influenced is something I've noticed too

fifteen years ago if you opened a game's trailer and you saw a cell shaded anime character doing insane particle effect sword combos you knew you were going to get the best game ever made, and now if you see a trailer with that in it you know it's going to be an ad for a fucking slot machine

I honestly wonder if something in modern media is hindering this kind of relationship with media past and present

with how much past media is accessible but also how many people get into creative workplaces tend to be major fans of big works as well (sometimes what they'll end up working on too)
