They used to feature these kinds of things on Top Gear. Shame about Jezza.
People tend to think of functional illiteracy as just being unable to read words aloud or such.
What it *really* means is such as not being able to perceive subtext, context, understand who the audience of something may be, etc.
Media illiteracy is fundamentally part of functional illiteracy.
Goodnight, David, peaceful night to you! Lucky eclipse watching!

*Part of being fluent* in a language, is being able to perceive and laugh at jokes in it.
This happens not on the level of "reading things quickly" but being able to understand subtext, context, and points of view.
Now think about Bluesky's famous population of joke understanders.

This one's for every horror fan hungry for an epic,
For every noir fan who's up for something strange,

βWars do not usually result from just causes but from pretexts. There probably never was a just cause why men should slaughter each other by wholesale, but there are . . . ambition, selfishness, folly, madness . . . not to be appeased save by . . . the killing of somebody else than themselves.β
You have made me laugh, thank you!

Our problem is that the people with the integrity it takes to be elected officials in this country don't have the $ to run for office.
And when one does pull themselves out the mud and start fundraising, the public is too raw from all the corruption and greed to trust them.
This article should have made the basic point that other countries are governed by the rule of law. Itβs not about βeagernessβ to prosecute and itβs not a puzzle. Itβs a marker of a deep US problem.
