A brilliant conversation. Reflections on poverty, power and attention that could really help steer all of public health in a better direction. #ottawa40

“The self-evident truths of public health remind us… of the basics; that ill health and inequity in health, are, via poverty, deprivation, or low-income, structurally determined, and that this is where our efforts must aim, ultimately”

A case of burying the lede.

Midway through, there's a quote: "people estimated that around a quarter of the national budget goes on overseas aid — far higher than the real figure of 0.3% of gross national income."

Why do people in the UK feel that way? That's the question. Everything else follows.

...across the global North. People are blaming long-standing social attitudes and their own professional and ethical failures on a discourse. It's an old silencing move. It requires a play at ignorance: pretend they don't know what they know or choose not to know what they could know. See below...

Note the article didn't blame "decolonization, reparations, and power dynamics" discourse for why "people estimated that around a quarter of the national budget goes on overseas aid — far higher than the real figure of 0.3% of gross national income." These figures have looked the same for decades...

What the US and our allies are experiencing now is what we've exported to the world for more than a century. It's the imperial boomerang. When it's done to us, we're outraged and think it's unacceptable, but when it's done to others, that's just how things are and you need to stop being an idealist.

To much of the Global South, Trump is acting like a typical US president.

To the Global North, he's a mad king, an aberrant, Hitler-like figure hellbent on global domination.

It's very telling and should be prompting everyone in the imperial core to reconsider their perspective and values.

I read articles like this one and first I cringe because it's the same ideas retold by the same people, then I laugh because the things they write are so fucking naive, and then I cry because I just see history repeating itself. Has it ever been thus? Yes.

I hope someone is doing an epistemic community analysis of the current global health reimagining exercise. It's insane how the same people (Helen Clarke, Peter Piot etc) and their friends try to imprint their views 'top down' on everybody else.
