It may be fiction, but I heard it was canceled because it had too many jokes. The network felt the audience lacked the attention span to handle it. In the days before live replay and internet video, they may have been right. I recorded all the episodes on VHS and watched them periodically for years.

They were going to redevelop the property into an urban Walmart with a parking garage not long after the Bombers left. If memory serves, the hitch was that it's prone to flooding. So, there it sits.

WEIRDEST WAY TO START A CAR ! #1956 #buick YouTube video by Jake Varbel

My grandmother's last car was a 1956 Buick that she drove until her passing in 1975. To start Buicks of that era, you turned the ignition on, then pressed the accelerator to the floor to engage the starter. So, maybe flooring a car at startup was a thing? youtube.com/shorts/W9oob...

When The U.S. Government Tried To Replace Migrant Farmworkers With High Schoolers In 1964, a program that brought migrant Mexican laborers to the U.S. ended. So the U.S. recruited American students to pick crops instead. When they saw their living conditions, strikes ensued.

Someone (@lewfoo) posted a long thread on the THREADS app about this. I’m posting the @npr.org story on which her thread was based here. PLEASE READ & SHARE. It’s so important.

Reviewing the work of the white churches, Frederick Douglass had this to say: β€œBetween the Christianity of this land and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible differenceβ€”so wide that to receive the one as good, pure, and holy, is of necessity to reject the other as bad, corrupt, and wicked. To be the friend of the one is of necessity to be the enemy of the other. I love the pure, peaceable, and impartial Christianity of Christ; I therefore hate the corrupt, slave-holding, women-whipping, cradle-plundering, partial and hypocritical Christianity of this land. Indeed, I can see no reason but the most deceitful one for calling the religion of this land Christianity…”

'Mission: Impossible' composer Lalo Schifrin dies at 93 Argentine pianist and composer Lalo Schifrin, best known for his scores for Mission: Impossible and more than 200 other films and TV shows, including Bullitt, Mannix and Cool Hand Luke, has died.

RIP Lalo Shifrin, 93. He composed so much more than the original Mission: Impossible theme, but that was pretty cool though.

The Ioniq 6 is a splendid vehicle. A low-mileage, manufacturer-certified BMW i3 or Mercedes EQE sedan might also fit the bill. I bought a CPO '22 Mercedes EQS 450+ about 15 months ago and love it, but it's probably too big for your tastes. Agree with other commenters that you shouldn't buy new.

A 15th floor view of the beach in North Myrtle Beach, SC.

I'm attending a conference at an oceanfront hotel in Myrtle Beach, where I last stayed in 2018. Compared to last time, the beach is much less crowded. Canadians are typically a big tourist contingent here and I am wondering if their boycott is the reason.

At a party given by a billionaire on Shelter Island, Kurt Vonnegut informs his pal, Joseph Heller, that their host, a hedge fund manager, had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his wildly popular novel Catch-22 over its whole history. Heller responds, β€œYes, but I have something he will never have … enough.” Enough. I was stunned by the simple eloquence of that wordβ€”stunned for two reasons: first, because I have been given so much in my own life and, second, because Joseph Heller couldn’t have been more accurate. For a critical element of our society, including many of the wealthiest and most powerful among us, there seems to be no limit today on what enough entails. From The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel

For many very wealthy people, there is no such thing as "enough".

The Real Threat of Fake Numbers Will Trump cook the books? Why assume he won’t?

Paul Krugman previously raised the question of what happens to TIPS if they start to fudge the inflation numbers. Fake economic statistics are definitely part of the authoritarian playbook. paulkrugman.substack.com/p/the-real-t...

How long did it take to unlace that fly when one urgently needed a bathroom break? I don't even like messing with button-fly pants much less laced ones.

The photo is from 1912, prior to the Great Depression, but you make a good point since child labor was still legal until 1938. But, white kids did apparently stop working to go to school. Black kids, particularly in coastal SC, probably didn't. Seems like that would make black kids more productive.

I live in the Deep South surrounded by these sorts of dipshits. Trust me, when it's time to vote they'll say "something something AOC Green New Deal socialism welfare" and continue to support the fascists. Sadly, I have concluded that outreach to the older Fox News-poisoned cohort is hopeless.

I distinctly remember going on a 5th grade field trip sometime in late '71 or early '72 to the then nearly-new nuclear plant in Hartsville, SC and being shown this film. I specifically recall the scene with the ping-pong balls and mousetraps. Alas, the visitors center is long gone now...

I drive a non-Tesla EV that is capable of charging at Tesla stations, but I'll be damned if I am going to spend a penny on any Elon-affiliated businesses. EV drivers should support alternative DC fast charging networks by patronizing them instead of Tesla, even if Tesla is currently more convenient.
