I have 2 days before my trip to the Arctic Winter Games, I decided to treat it like a mini residency.

I am Luke Parnell, I play and design board and card games. I have been a professional artist for 20 years, avid hiker and northerner. While this space will centre on board game design I will also show my art practice.

Closing reception tonight! Be there or be 0 squared. I wonβt be there but a lot of cool will be. Thank you to students and staff that put this together, working with artists is like herding cats, so good job!

DARK HORSE: Are you at all surprised at how welcomed and popular Hellboy has become, or did you have confidence when you started creating that the character was someone people would connect with? MIKE MIGNOLA: I am still very surprised and did not expect this. I just wanted to draw monsters. DH: Hellboy deals with all kinds of paranormal events; have you ever experienced a paranormal phenomenon? And if so, did you use your experience as a way to help you create? MM: I've never had a paranormal experience. DH: What is it about fear that makes such an interesting plot device? MM: I don't know ... I just like to draw monsters. DH: As a writer, do you believe characters should develop based on their internal systems or based on situations and their environment? MM: Mostly, I just want to do stories about monsters.
This reminds me so much of Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, who when quizzed about why he took a story in a certain direction usually answers along the lines of, βBecause I wanted to draw [insert thing he wanted to draw].β
This reminds me of a video I saw awhile back where 2 guys were doing a top 10 solo games. I turned it off at 6 because between the 2 of them they had only played 3 of the games and neither had played them solo. Yeah that AI review channel is weird, I blocked it.
By our count, we're just a couple of months away from TCTC 2026. Do you have your ticket yet?
This was a rough week, on the weekend a tooth I was supposed to have removed broke (health problems delayed it). The left side of my face swelled up and the pain was excruciating, I couldnβt see the dentist till Wednesday so now Iβm just recovering, I was suppose to be working on this beauty.
You also did the gods work by play testing prototype games, thank you!
Yup Canada is expensive, there are plenty of fast food joints around there and the mall is close by for the food court, but whatta you going to do eh!
I played a game of , βTwas the Night, the Christmas themed game I made for my family. It went well, they loved the guessing game when you pass go and the set collection.
The board for βTwas the Night, is done. Iβm not super happy with the colours but itβs better than black and white.
Second street coloured, unfortunately I donβt have any light brown markers so I tried pointalism with the dark brown, itβs meh. When you take a Christmas cookie card there is a festive dad joke that you say out loud to score on a track.
And I put stickers on the board as well!
Iβm colouring the board for βTwas the Night, today. Thatβs the name of the Christmas game Iβm working on.
I think Iβll call itβ¦ βTwas the Night
I got to playtest the game last night and it does work. The goal of the game is to lift everyoneβs Christmas spirit.
I wish I took some pictures, I always get caught up and forget to take pictures. It looks great on the table even though there is little colour and it is very prototypy.
I made all the cards and the chits for my Christmas themed game. The board is out for printing, itβs just being printed black & white on paper. I just need to make the custom dice and the Christmas cards which will have a dry erase board and each players scoring formula.
This is the board for the Christmas game Iβm making to play with my family, the art is a mix of original art and free icons I assisted. Iβm pretty happy with the composition tho. Iβll print it black and white on poster paper, maybe Iβll get a few and hand colour one. Iβm really pantsing it here.
Xmastreeopoly, is just a working title for the Christmas themed game Iβm making to play with my family this year. Iβll start working on the prototype today and start solo playtesting by Wednesday. It a quick turnaround but Iβm inspired!
This purely a passion project so Iβm having fun playing around
Iβm making a game to play with my family at Christmas. They know monopoly and they enjoy Cards against Humanity. I decided to base the game around those 2 games. Iβve been working on it for 3 days and will start on prototype later today. Iβll share more as it goes, happy holidays!
Candice is a great host, I hope she can start a new podcast, or maybe cohost or be a regular guest

The Witcher old world solo, Defeat! I beat the Legendary Monster but I ran out of cards so I drove it off, unfortunately it only had two move cards left so I lost. I should have waited one more turn and grabbed a couple more cards, plus my cards didnβt combo so well.
Hey Sen if you ever needed someone to step in and help out I would be willing to. Tho Iβm perfectly happy being just a big fan of the show. Be well
No doubt, itβs a valuable resource for new designers and the multi host format works really well. I saw Jay at ProtoconBC!
Look what I got in today! A bit of a delivery delay but it all worked out. Fate of Witches: The Coven Building Game, unboxing. I know nothing about the game, I bought it because of the card art.
In the last year my art has graced the cover of two books. βFall of Manβ on the cover of Aesthetics of Repair by Eugenia Kisin,
βNeon Reconciliation Explosionβ on the cover of Revue Dβetudes Autochtones. They both feature an interview with yours truly. #lukeparnellart
