Quality Criteria for Serious Games: Serious Part, Game Part, and Balance Serious games are digital games that have an additional goal beyond entertainment. Recently, many studies have explored different quality criteria for serious games, including effectiveness and attrac...

Great JMIR Serious Games article on balancing the β€˜serious’ and β€˜game’ parts in serious games.

Key point: the serious part should be unskippable. No transfer needed - playing is working on the goal. Same goes for any well-designed creative intervention!

Very interesting read on how to make #stakeholderanalysis more #inclusive using the 3i framework. 'Research repeatedly shows that participatory processes work best when they include all who stand to gain or lose.'

Nienke Beerlage-de Jong on creative intervention development eZoon In a series of interviews with partners of 8D, we discuss creative intervention development within research projects. In the first episode: Dr Nienke Beerlage-de Jong from the University of Twente.

🧠 How do you design serious games that actually work in public health?

In our collab with Dr. Nienke Beerlage-de Jong (UT), we co-created eZoonβ€”a tool tackling wicked problems like zoonotic outbreaks through participatory design.

Last week at #StressConnect2025 in NEMO: 125 researchers & businesses came together to discuss the future of stress measurement and interventions. Public-private collaboration is essential to bridge the gap between scientific insight and real-world impact; great to see it happening on this scale!

I started as a programmer, driven by a passion for societal impact. While creating serious games, I saw too many promising healthcare and education interventions fail to reach practice. This led me to design thinkingβ€”how can we bridge the gap between research and real-world change? [2/4]

Co-creation in research: insights and outcomes | Research & Design What are the academic and societal benefits of a participatory approach? A blog on the 'unexpected gains' of co-creation in (healthcare) research.

How can #cocreation amplify both academic #impact and societal relevance? This article explores a practical example: our designers collaborated with researcher Lise Beumeler to develop a #VR-game that supports recovery after an Intensive Care (IC) admission. Read more: 8d-games.nl/en/co-creati...

"Designers and researchers should work together to determine which method fits best at each stage and how it can create value for both research and design." Hear, hear!

Unlocking the full potential of Behavioural Insights for policy Complex (or β€˜wicked’) problems require adaptive solutions. By failing to address the variables of human behaviour, the effectiveness of policies can also be reduced. This is where Behavioural insights...

Behavioural insights (BI) play a crucial role in the design (thinking) process, engaging stakeholders and shaping policies that drive change. A fascinating new paper by Joint Research Centre (EC) explores how BI can be leveraged beyond nudging individuals: policy-lab.ec.europa.eu/news/unlocki...
