As Mel walked away, she stopped in her tracks, her gaze turning to the other toons in the park. They were having fun, talking and yelling and laughing. Some hugged, others kissed. Some rode attractions or played games, others ate treats. For a brief moment, a smile made its way on the hare's face. There once was a time when such things did not exist. When smiles were scarce; when screams muffled laughs. They had gone through so much, and yet there they were, acting as if it had all been just a bad dream.

Why can't I do the same?

The world is healing. Why not her?

Excerpt from Book 1 of Amniland, still a WIP.

When writers share space with other writers it is often an act of bolstering confidence, to feel 'less alone' in our sense of vulnerability. Every other writer is in the same boat or exposed to similar dangers. Support is a good thing as we are cowardly brave.

A noir setting of a grimy alley with fire exits, a drawing in ink of a stuffed toy animal sloth dressed as a noir detective, smoking, looking world-weary, paws in pockets of trenchcoat. Pitch: After a strange bloom reveals magic she was never meant to have, Clara Wells, a reserved bookshop clerk in 1920s America, is thrust into a magical society that survives through secrecy, regulation, and control. Her employer-turned-mentor, Asher Thorne, has taken it upon himself to protect and teach her rather than throw her to the wolves as would be 'proper'. The guidance meant to keep her alive evolves into something far deeper and more intimate, even as the danger to both of them grows closer by the day. This novel explores how trust can become an act of rebellion in a world that treats those it can't understand as a threat to be erased.

Comparisons to A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness: Intimacy unfolds under constant risk of discovery. Love is a destabilizing force in a trauma informed system. One partner acts as a guide through an unfamiliar system.

Comparisons to Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke: Magic is governed through formal institutions, controlling who may safely belong and who is othered. Othered individuals the system cannot process lead to catastrophe.

Context: A character-driven historical fantasy where personal relationships collide with rigid and authoritarian magical governance.

Romance Tropes: Slow-burn romance. Trust built through shared risk. Mutual pining. Forced proximity. Deliberately equalized power. Trust before intimacy. Partners against the system. (Images of a ring of skeleton keys hanging up, the sculpture "Psyche revived by Cupid's kiss", and two wooden wizard/fantasy style wands laying crossed on a table.)
Story Features: Adult historical fantasy. Teaching driven by responsibility, not authority. Hidden magical society operating alongside the mundane world. Character-first narrative focus. Late escalation of physical intimacy. (Images of a shelf of dark liquor lit from behind, shelves of well-maintained antique books, and an open book with a wooden wand sitting on top of its pages.)

Book Excerpt:
β€œReally though, if you could get a potion that did anything at all, what would you ask for?”

In that instant, Mr. Thorne dropped the tea cup he had been polishing. It shattered on the wooden floor in front of the desk. He cursed under his breath as he lowered himself to the floor to address the broken porcelain.

β€œI’d certainly take a luck potion, but Lord knows I’ll never be able to afford that,” Mr. Thorne stated, far too seriously for the topic at hand. He then looked up and met Clara’s eyes, startled. It was as if he was surprised by his own answer. He stood, setting the fragmented tea cup on the counter before straightening his hair.

β€œWhat about you, Clara? If you could make a magical elixir of any kind, what would it be?”

Clara thought about it for a moment, looking out the window. The depressing weather was starting to catch up with her.

β€œWell, something to give me energy and lift my spirits would be nice today.”

Mr. Thorne grinned at this response, retrieving two still intact tea cups and lifting them in front of him.

β€œIt just so happens that I have the perfect potion for you steeping in the back.”

(Excerpt from Chapter 3, condensed)

Travis Hughes is taller than he looks, he'll have you know. Though just short enough that his near translucent complexion and vibrant orange hair catches the corner of your eye every time he turns. He's not bothered by looks and only dons a white collar shirt, a black vest, and skinny jeans when company is over. And he considers no one company.

It's not like it's a messy bookshopβ€”there's hardly any books on the floor and each aisle is almost passable. There's even art on the walls, some fake plants, and a roaring fire, what more are you looking for? Now if it's for something in particular amongst the jam-packed bookshelves of Lyric Fiction you might want to leave and find a reference libraryβ€”it'll be faster that way.

So what if Travis spends his days getting high in his bookshop. And who cares if the girl is looking for help, it’s not his problem. Especially if it means reliving the reason for his banishment. She’ll have to find her own way out of the Otherworld before she becomes fae food.

The golden glow from the overhead light softly illuminates the messy aisles of Lyric Fiction. While it's not the tidiest bookshop in the world, it's also not the tidiest, with random books and papers strewn about every available surface. An ancient cash register anchors the corner of a heavy wooden desk, with a redhead sat refuge behind. One snap and the end of his smoke lights, startling Lana to a standstill. Maybe he has a lighter in his hands?

All Lana wants is her life back on track and out of the Otherworld. She isn’t looking to learn magic on the fly or navigate the social dichotomy of the fae. And she definitely isn’t looking to babysit a lazy magic man, either. If only she could get back home without his help.
